When? roughly. asks five questions about the past each day, such as when Everest was first climbed, and you pin each answer on a timeline that runs from 3000 BC to today. You score by how many years you are off, and the reveal shows the real year and where other players guessed.
About When? roughly.
When? is one of the daily guessing games from roughly., a small site run by one person in St. Gallen whose games all ask for an estimate rather than an exact answer: how big, how expensive, how far away. In When? the question is the year.
Each day brings five questions, the same for every player, each with a small silhouette as a clue. Today's first one asked when Everest was first climbed. You press or drag along a timeline split into eras (Ancient, Empires, Sails, Steam, Wires, Now), or type the year and pick AD or BC, then lock it in.
The reveal zooms in on the right stretch of the timeline. It shows your year beside the real one, how many years early or late you were, how you did against everyone else who played, and a dot for every other player's guess. A short line ties the answer to a date you may know better, such as how long before the Moon landing it happened, and a Learn more link leads to the source.
New rounds arrive at midnight UTC. Today's rounds are free and need no account; playing past days is part of the paid roughly+ tier. You can open a room, share its code and play the same rounds live with friends or a stream audience. The game runs in English and German, has no ads, and credits Wikipedia and other public sources for its facts.

Tips
- Anchor on dates you know well and judge the question as before or after them.
- The eras on the timeline are not equal in width: recent centuries take up more room, so place modern events with care.
- Type the year when you already know it roughly; it is quicker than dragging.
- Read the comparison line after each reveal; it gives you anchors for later days.
