on guessdash.com

Auctimate board on round 1 of 5: a Voice of America legacy music collection lot with its photo of shelved vinyl records and a box for the final price in US dollars (listdle.com's shot)

Auctimate is a daily price-guessing game on GuessDash. Each round shows photos of a real lot from US government surplus auctions, and you type what you think it finally sold for in dollars. A guess within about 5% scores the full 1,000 points, and you can compare your rounds with other players' scores.

About Auctimate (GuessDash)

Auctimate is one of the daily games on GuessDash, a site of small estimation and geography puzzles. Its rounds use real lots sold through GSA Auctions, the US government's surplus sales: vehicles, equipment, furniture and whatever else agencies sell off. For each lot you get its photos, which you can flip through, and one box for the final price in US dollars.

Scoring works on how far your guess is from the real price as a ratio, not in dollars, so being off by 30% on a truck costs the same as being off by 30% on a box of tools. A guess within about 5% scores the full 1,000 points, and a guess ten times too high or too low scores nothing. After each round the actual price is shown, and once you finish the board you can see how other players scored on the same lots.

It suits anyone who enjoys price-guessing shows or browsing auction listings, and it takes a few minutes a day.

How to play Auctimate (GuessDash)

  1. Open Auctimate on GuessDash and look at the first lot's photos.
  2. Type your guess for its final sale price in US dollars and submit.
  3. See the actual price and your score for the round, up to 1,000 points.
  4. Work through all of the day's lots, then compare your total with other players.

Tips

  • Think in proportions: scoring compares the ratio of your guess to the price, so the size of the number matters less than being close in percentage.
  • Look through every photo; condition, quantity and missing parts change surplus prices a lot.
  • Government surplus often sells below retail, so start lower than a new item's shop price.
