Tally on Mind Loft for October 29, 2026: a 5x5 grid with some filled and blacked-out squares, row and column targets showing what each still needs, and the rack of 14 tiles

Tally is a free daily number puzzle from Mind Loft. Each day gives a grid and a rack with exactly the number tiles you need, and you place them so that every row and column adds up to the target printed at its end. Counting what is left on the rack settles the close calls.

About Tally (Mind Loft)

Tally is a number puzzle on Mind Loft, a free site of daily browser games, in the sudoku family with a ledger twist. Each day gives a grid with a target printed at the end of every row and column, and a rack of number tiles. You place every tile so that each line adds up to its target.

What sets it apart from kakuro or a magic square is the supply. The rack holds exactly the tiles the grid needs, no more and no fewer, so when the arithmetic alone leaves two ways to finish a line, counting what is still on the rack decides it. Every board has a single solution.

A few squares start filled and a few are blacked out. The header counts your moves against the fewest possible (14 on 29 October 2026) and how many of the ten lines balance. Each target also shows what its line still needs, such as 6 in 2. Digits repeat, so the rack shows how many of each you hold and strikes out the ones you have none of. You tap a tile and then a square, or drag a placed tile to move it. Sending a tile home is free, and a Hint button and an Undo sit under the rack. Solving in the fewest moves is the perfect score, and ties break on fewer errors and then time.

A new ledger goes up at midnight US Eastern Time, and the Sunday Edition is a bigger 6x6 board. Mind Loft suggests Crux, Span and Dating alongside it; for more sums, its Sums (kakuro) and Carve are close relatives.

How to play Tally (Mind Loft)

  1. Open mindloftdaily.com/tally and press Start to see the grid, the targets and the rack.
  2. Tap a tile on the rack, then tap an empty square to place it. You can also tap the square first.
  3. Make every row and column add up to the target printed at its end. The small line under each target shows what is still missing.
  4. Use every tile on the rack exactly once. Drag a placed tile to move or swap it.
  5. Finish in as few moves as you can. The fewest possible moves is a perfect score.

Tips

  • Start with the lines whose target can only be made one way from the tiles you have.
  • Keep an eye on the rack: if two fillings fit a line, the leftover tiles usually rule one out.
  • Plan before placing, since moving a tile again counts as a move.
  • Lines that cross several others settle the most squares; work them first.

Questions

How is Tally different from kakuro?

You place a fixed rack of tiles rather than any digits, so what is left on the rack is a clue too.

How is Tally scored?

Solving in the fewest possible moves is the perfect score. Ties on the daily leaderboard break on fewer errors, then on time.

Is Tally free?

Yes. Tally runs in the browser on mindloftdaily.com at no cost. There is no app and no account to make; entering a display name only puts your result on the daily leaderboard.

When does a new Tally come out?

Every day at midnight US Eastern Time, with the same board for every player. Sundays bring a bigger 6x6 board.

Can I play old Tally boards?

Yes. Mind Loft keeps past days in its puzzle archive, together with each day's standings.
