Switch Spots is a Puzzle Society logic puzzle on a board of two-coloured dots. Arrow buttons on the sides flip whole rows and columns and corner buttons add other moves, and the aim is to make every dot the same colour in as few moves as possible. Each day's game has three boards of rising difficulty, on GoComics with a subscription.
About Switch Spots
Switch Spots is one of the games the Puzzle Society, Andrews McMeel Universal's puzzle site, began making in-house in 2022. It is played on the GoComics puzzle pages. The Puzzle Society describes it as a twist on the classic tile-match game, made more interesting by its asymmetrical side arrows and corner buttons.
The board is a square of dots in two colours, white and red in the game's art. Pressing an arrow on the edge of the board flips the dots in that row or column, so each one changes to the other colour; the arrows sit on different sides for different lines, and the corner buttons add moves of their own. The goal is a board of one colour, reached within a set number of moves.
A day's game has three levels, each harder than the last. Because flipping a line twice undoes it, the puzzle is really about choosing which set of flips to make, and in what order matters less than which. Its designer, Abigail McNaghten, also made a colour-blind version that adds high-contrast shapes on top of the dots.
Switch Spots is included with a GoComics subscription. It suits players of Lights Out and other flip puzzles.
How to play Switch Spots
- Open Switch Spots on the GoComics puzzles page and sign in with a GoComics subscription.
- Look at the board of two-coloured dots and the arrow and corner buttons around it.
- Press an arrow to flip every dot in its row or column to the other colour; try the corner buttons for their own moves.
- Make every dot on the board one colour within the move limit, then go on to the next of the day's three levels.
Tips
- Flipping the same line twice cancels out, so each line is either flipped once or not at all.
- Count the odd dots in each row and column before you start; they show which lines must change.
- Notice which sides have arrows: a line you cannot flip directly has to be fixed by the others.
