Fit eight pieces into a calendar board so that only today's date shows.

A-Puzzle-A-Day store art: a wooden calendar board with pieces placed around the months and days, under A new challenge every day of the year, with themed sets beside it

A-Puzzle-A-Day is the official app of DragonFjord's calendar puzzle. The board lists the twelve months and the days 1 to 31, and each day you place eight pieces so that every square is covered except today's month and today's date. Every date of the year can be made, and some are harder than others.

About A-Puzzle-A-Day (DragonFjord app)

A-Puzzle-A-Day began as a wooden puzzle from the Norwegian puzzle maker DragonFjord: a frame printed with the months Jan to Dec and the days 1 to 31, and eight flat pieces that fit inside it. The challenge is to cover every square except two, the current month and the current day, so the date is the one thing left showing. With 366 possible dates it is a new packing puzzle every day of the year.

The app is the makers' own version on screen. You drag, turn and flip the pieces into the frame for today's date, and you can score up to three different solutions for the same day. Dragon coins and trophies reward solutions, harder dates pay bonuses, streaks of solved days pay extra, and a solution bank shows each month with the days you have solved. Hint tickets help when you are stuck, and time machine passes let you go back for yesterday.

Coins buy other looks for the board: 30 themed sets, from animal prints and gemstones to steampunk gears, with light and dark modes and the calendar labels in eleven languages. The app is free with ads; coins, passes and a Premium upgrade that opens any date from the past year are sold in the app. It suits anyone who likes spatial puzzles, and owners of the wooden puzzle who want it on their phone.

How to play A-Puzzle-A-Day (DragonFjord app)

  1. Open the app: the bar at the top shows today's date, and its month and day are the two squares to leave empty.
  2. Drag a piece onto the calendar frame and rotate or flip it to fit.
  3. Place all eight pieces so every square is covered except today's month and day.
  4. Clear the board and look for a second and third solution for the same date for extra rewards.
  5. Use a hint ticket if you are stuck, or a time machine pass to solve yesterday's date.

Tips

  • Place the largest pieces first along the edges of the frame.
  • Look at the shape of the space around today's month and date: the pieces touching them are usually the hardest to fit.
  • A date that is hard one way round often opens up if you flip the long pieces.
