Perfect Pitch Puzzle day 1155: a Play the tune button over six empty rows of six note boxes, an on-screen keyboard from C5 to B5, instrument and difficulty menus, and the countdown to the next puzzle

Perfect Pitch Puzzle is a daily ear training game in the style of Wordle. Each day it plays a melody, often a recognisable theme from classical music or film, and you work out its first six notes in six tries. You can play back your own guess before you submit it, and each note is marked as right, misplaced or absent.

About Perfect Pitch Puzzle

Perfect Pitch Puzzle turns ear training into a daily guessing game. The answer is a short melody played in the browser, and you have to write down its first six notes. You do not need perfect pitch to play: the colour feedback lets you work it out over several tries, using relative pitch and a little music theory.

The feedback follows Wordle. A note in the correct spot is marked correct, a note that is in the tune but in another position is marked as in the wrong spot, and a note that does not appear in the tune at all is marked absent. Before you submit a row, a play button lets you hear your own guess, so you can compare it with the tune by ear.

The tunes come from a long list in the game's code: classical pieces such as Vivaldi's Four Seasons and Handel's Passacaglia, along with film and television themes like the Pink Panther. The game knows each tune's key and whether it uses flats, which helps when you are naming notes like B flat or F sharp.

A new puzzle arrives every day at midnight, with a countdown on the page until the next one. Your results are kept in your browser as statistics, and there is a Discord community for players.

Options sit under the keyboard: the tune can be played on piano, violin, French horn, choir, guitar, flute, ocarina or, for extra points, bird tweets, and the difficulty can be set to easy, normal or hard. A day counter with minus and plus buttons lets you go back to earlier puzzles.

How to play Perfect Pitch Puzzle

  1. Open Perfect Pitch Puzzle and press play to hear the day's tune.
  2. Enter what you think are the first six notes of the melody.
  3. Press the play button to hear your guess and compare it with the tune before you submit.
  4. Read the marks: right note in the right spot, right note in the wrong spot, or not in the tune, and adjust.
  5. Find all six notes within six tries, then wait for the countdown to the next puzzle.

Tips

  • Find the first note before anything else: the rest of the melody is easier to place relative to it.
  • Listen for whether the tune moves in steps or leaps, then check the intervals in your guess by playing it back.
  • If a tune sounds familiar, hum it slowly and count the notes to get the rhythm out of the way.
  • Remember the tune is in a key: once you know some notes, the key narrows down the rest.

Questions

Do I need perfect pitch to play?

No. You get six tries with colour feedback on every note, so relative pitch and trial and error are enough.

How many notes do I have to find?

The first six notes of the tune, in six tries.

When is there a new puzzle?

The site says a new puzzle is released daily at midnight; the countdown on the page runs to midnight on your device's clock.

Can I hear my guess?

Yes, a play button plays your guess before you submit it.
