An Ordo 4x4 grid of coloured tiles with shapes, some locked and others marked with row or column bars, and a key explaining the marks

Ordo is a daily deduction puzzle for iPhone and iPad. Each day brings one shuffled grid of coloured, shaped tiles with a single hidden solution, the same for everyone. You swap tiles and submit guesses. Correct tiles lock, and small notches show whether a tile's kind belongs elsewhere in its row, its column or both.

About Ordo

Ordo is a grid puzzle built on guess and feedback. The day's board is a square of coloured tiles, each with a simple shape, shuffled out of order, and there is one correct layout. You swap tiles to try an arrangement and press Guess. The board then marks every tile: a bold border means it is in the right place and it locks, notches at the sides mean that kind of tile belongs elsewhere in this row, notches above and below mean elsewhere in this column, four notches mean both, and a faded tile belongs in a different row and column.

From those marks you reason out where everything goes. A locked tile settles a lot, and a tile that keeps its side notches only has to move sideways. The daily has no timer, lives or fail state. Your result is the number of guesses and swaps you needed, and a solve on the first guess counts as perfect. Boards run from 3x3 with four colours to 5x5 with six.

Everyone gets the same numbered puzzle each day, so results can be shared as a coloured grid without giving the answer away. The app tracks guesses, swaps, streaks and perfect solves. An optional purchase adds the archive of missed days, Ordo Expert (a second, harder daily with a guess limit) and more detailed stats.

Ordo is made by John Davenport and came out on the App Store in July 2026, with its last update on 29 July. A free web version at play.ordopuzzles.com served the same daily puzzle, but its puzzle list ends at No. 104 on 1 October 2026 and it has shown "Today's puzzle isn't ready yet" since. The app has no ads, accounts or sign-ups. It suits players who like a quiet visual logic puzzle over a word game.

How to play Ordo

  1. Open today's Ordo puzzle in the app.
  2. Tap two tiles to swap them and set up the layout you want to test.
  3. Press Guess and read the board. Bold borders are correct and lock, side notches mean elsewhere in this row, top and bottom notches mean elsewhere in this column.
  4. Swap again using what the marks tell you, and guess again.
  5. Finish the grid in as few guesses and swaps as you can, then share your result.

Tips

  • Treat each locked tile as fixed. Long press a tile you are sure of to pin it so you do not swap it by accident.
  • A tile with only side notches has to move sideways, and one with only top and bottom notches moves up or down.
  • A faded tile tells you its kind is wanted in neither its row nor its column, which rules out a whole cross of squares.
  • Change several unsure tiles at once early on to learn more from each guess.
