A Washington Post news quiz: name the missing word in a real quote.

on washingtonpost.com

On the Record (The Washington Post) on a phone: a Science question about the ivory-billed woodpecker, a real quote with the bird's name blanked out, a Hint button, 4 points and a Type Guess box

On the Record is The Washington Post's quotable news quiz. Monday to Thursday bring one question each about a recent event, built around a real quote with a key word left out; Friday's edition has ten quotes and a bonus wager. You type your answer for full points or spend points on a hint or multiple choice.

About On the Record (The Washington Post)

On the Record is the news quiz on The Washington Post's Games page, beside its crossword, Keyword and sudoku. The Post launched it in February 2023 as its first game made in-house. Each dated quiz asks about a recent event and shows a real quote tied to it, with a key word left out: on 5 October 2026 the question asked which state had become the first to bar grocery stores from using electronic pricing tools to change food prices through the day, beside a quote from Gov. Wes Moore with the state's name blanked out.

Monday to Thursday each bring a single question, and a new quiz goes up at midnight Eastern time. Friday's edition stays up through the weekend and holds ten quotes, followed by a bonus question on which you stake the points you built during the week. Topics run across politics, culture, world news, food and sports.

A correct typed answer on the first try earns 6 points. A wrong answer loses four points and takes you straight to multiple choice. You can also give up points before guessing: a hint costs 1 and switching to multiple choice costs 3. If you miss a day, past quizzes from the week can still be played.

A free Post account saves your scores and lifetime stats, but the quiz can be played without one. The page carries display ads beside the quiz. It suits readers who follow the news and want a quick check on it each weekday.

How to play On the Record (The Washington Post)

  1. Press Play today's on the On the Record page.
  2. Read the question and the real quote with its missing word.
  3. Type your answer and submit it for the full 6 points, or use a hint (1 point) or multiple choice (3 points) first.
  4. A wrong typed answer costs 4 points and switches you to multiple choice.
  5. On Friday, play the ten-quote edition, then stake your week's points on the bonus wager question.

Tips

  • Read the quote closely: the name, title and party shown after it often narrow the answer at once.
  • Type an answer only when you are fairly sure, since a miss costs 4 points.
  • A hint costs only 1 point, so it is worth taking before risking a wrong guess.
  • Catch up on missed days during the week so you have more points for the wager.
