Enigma Machine Simulator Intercept #15 of 28 October 2026: key sheet with rotors III V IV, rings Q O D, start G B O, nine plugboard pairs and one smudged, reflector B

Enigma Machine Simulator is a working Enigma I in the browser with a daily code breaking puzzle. Each day brings a new intercept and a key sheet with one plugboard cable smudged out: set the machine, work out the missing pair and read the message in six tries. It is free, with no account and no ads.

About Enigma Machine Simulator

Enigma Machine Simulator is a browser game from DEXM Labs, made by Arthur Jones and launched in October 2026. At its heart is a working Enigma I as the German Army and Air Force used it: rotors I to V with their real wiring and turnover notches, reflector B, ring settings, a ten cable plugboard and the double step of the middle rotor. You can use it as a plain simulator, typing or pasting letters and watching them come out enciphered.

The daily game turns that machine into a puzzle. Every day there is a new numbered intercept and a key sheet listing the three rotors and their order, the ring settings, the start positions and the plugboard pairs, except that one cable has been smudged. You set the machine from the sheet, guess which pair of letters the missing cable joins, and run the intercept through. A wrong cable leaves some words garbled; the right one gives the whole message. You then type your reading as the answer: each try shows a row of squares, one per word, green where the word is right, and you have six tries. Your played, won, streak and best counts are kept in the browser, and a win adds to the points shared by the maker's games on dexmlabs.app.

It differs from daily cryptograms because you never solve a letter swap by pattern. The work is in setting the machine correctly and narrowing down which letters the missing cable could join, so it suits players who like ciphers and the history of codebreaking. The page also explains how the machine works, why no letter can encipher as itself, and how the Polish Cipher Bureau and Bletchley Park broke it. A practice intercept gives more rounds once the day's is done. The day's key is new each day, while the plain message comes from a set of 20 that repeats in turn, so the work of setting the machine is what changes.

How to play Enigma Machine Simulator

  1. Open the page and press Today's intercept to see the day's key sheet and ciphertext.
  2. In the machine below, set the left, middle and right rotors, their rings and their start letters as the key sheet lists them.
  3. Enter the nine plugboard pairs from the sheet, plus a guess for the smudged cable, using only letters the other cables leave free.
  4. Paste the intercept into the machine and read the output: a wrong cable leaves some words garbled, the right one gives clean text.
  5. Type your reading of the message under Your reading and press Send; each green square is a word in the right place, and you have six tries.
  6. Copy your result to share it, or press Practice intercept for another round.

Tips

  • Letters already used by the other cables on the sheet cannot be on the missing one, which leaves far fewer pairs to try.
  • The machine starts again from your settings each time you type, so check the start letters before every reading; only what you Send counts as a try.
  • Look for a readable word in a part of the reading; it shows the settings are right even where the missing cable garbles a few letters.
  • Use the practice intercept to get used to setting the rotors before you spend the day's tries.

Questions

When does a new intercept come out?

The daily puzzle follows the date in the UK (Europe/London), so a new intercept starts at midnight UK time.

How many tries do I get?

Six. A try is the reading you type and send; the machine itself can be run as often as you like. Each try shows which words are right.

Does it cost anything or need an account?

No. It is free, plays without an account, and the page says it uses no cookies.

Is the simulator accurate?

Its maker says it models the Enigma I with rotors I to V and their real wirings and notches, reflector B, ring settings, a plugboard and the double step, tested against known test vectors. The messages in the game are made up.

Does the message ever repeat?

The day's key is always new, but the plain messages come from a set of 20 used in turn, so the same message comes back every 20 days under a different key.
