Clueless is the Lessgames daily word game with no clues at all. You type any word and get a number for how far its meaning is from the secret word, then use those numbers to close in. Your score is the number of guesses it takes.

About Clueless

Clueless is one of the daily games from Lessgames, the site behind Songless and Wordless. Each day has one secret word, and every player hunts the same one. There are no letters to go on and no definition; the only feedback is how close in meaning each of your guesses is.

You type a word and the game gives it a number: the lower the number, the closer the word is to the answer. A coloured bar shows the same thing at a glance, green and long for a warm guess, red and short for a cold one. Your guesses stay in a list sorted from closest to farthest, so you can read it for patterns, find the topic and then the word itself. Very common words are refused, so you cannot simply list filler words to scan the field.

If you are stuck you can take a hint from the menu beside the guess box, but each one adds three guesses to your score, and you can give up to see the answer. When you finish, the game shows how your guess count compares with other players that day and what share of players failed. A new word arrives at midnight by your own clock. The daily game is free with no sign-up; playing past days from the calendar needs a Lessgames subscription.

It plays in the same family as Semantle and Contexto and suits players who like thinking about how words relate rather than how they are spelled.

How to play Clueless

  1. Open Clueless and type any word as your first guess.
  2. Read the number it gets: the lower it is, the closer that word is in meaning to the secret word.
  3. Use your closest guesses, at the top of the list, to work out the topic, then guess words near them.
  4. Take a hint from the menu beside the guess box if you are stuck, knowing each adds three guesses to your score.
  5. Keep going until you hit the secret word, then compare your count with other players.

Tips

  • Open with broad words from different fields, such as an animal, a feeling and a tool, to find which area is warm.
  • Once a guess ranks well, try its synonyms and the things it goes with.
  • Common filler words are refused, so use concrete nouns and verbs.
  • Save hints for the end, when one can save you many guesses.
