Nounable puzzle #1022 on desktop: three guesses ranked, Beyonce in green at 137, Nintendo and Paris in red past 23,000, with guesses, score and par 29 above

Nounable is a daily guessing game like Contexto, but for proper nouns. The secret answer might be a person, a city, a film or a brand, and each guess gets a rank showing how semantically close it is; the answer is rank 1, and you try to reach it in as few guesses as possible.

About Nounable

Nounable is a free daily word game in which the secret is a proper noun: a specific person, place, film, band, brand, landmark or fictional character. There is one puzzle a day, and the site says everyone in the world gets the same answer.

Every guess is ranked by how semantically close it is to the secret, which is rank 1. Behind the scenes each of the game's roughly 35,000 known entities is represented as a text embedding, and your guess is ranked by cosine similarity against all the others. You start somewhere around rank 20,000 and use each rank like a compass heading to choose the next guess, aiming to finish under par.

Scoring works like golf: each puzzle has a par, usually in the high 20s, and your score is your guess count plus hint penalties. A hint places an entity closer than your best guess so far and costs 2 points, then 4, then 6. There is no guess limit, and you can give up to see the answer.

The home page shows the week's daily games so you can catch up on previous days, a past answers page lists every earlier answer with a short recap, and an Infinite mode serves unlimited random puzzles that do not touch your stats. Progress and streaks are kept through an anonymous sign-in, so no account is needed. The site carries Google AdSense.

Nounable is an independent project by a solo developer. It suits trivia fans and players of Contexto or Semantle who know a lot of names.

How to play Nounable

  1. Open nounable.me and press Play on the daily game.
  2. Type a well-known proper noun into the box and pick it from the autocomplete: a person, place, film, brand and so on.
  3. Read its rank and colour: green under 300 is very close, yellow and orange are warmer or cold, red past 5,000 is far off.
  4. Use the closest guesses to steer toward rank 1, taking a hint only when stuck, since each one adds to your score.
  5. Compare your score with the day's par and share the result.

Tips

  • Start broad with very different categories, such as a country, a musician and a film, to find the right area.
  • Once you have a close guess, try things that are related to it in more than one way.
  • Use Infinite mode to practise without affecting your streak.
