Cipher is a daily cryptogram from Puzzle Theory. Each day a well-known quote is shown with every letter swapped for another, and you work out the substitution from word shapes and letter patterns. The daily and a practice mode are free with no account; a Pro plan adds a Hard mode and the last 30 days.
About Cipher
Cipher is a quote cryptogram on Puzzle Theory, a site of twenty daily word, number and logic puzzles that all reset at 00:00 UTC. Every letter of a famous quote or proverb has been replaced by another letter, and the same swap holds across the whole line. Your job is to find out what each coded letter really stands for.
A new puzzle goes up at 00:00 UTC and is the same for every player. Two letters are filled in for you at the start. Under the coded line sits a row of boxes, one for each coded letter in the quote: type a real letter into a box and it fills in every place that letter appears, so one good guess can open up several words at once. Each real letter can only be used once, and giving it to a new coded letter takes it off the old one. A timer and a count such as 2/14 letters show how far along you are, and the puzzle finishes by itself as soon as every guess matches the quote. A Reveal solution button gives up and shows the answer.
The quotes are short and familiar. In the game's code the Normal daily is drawn by the date from a bank of 35 well-known lines, with a new letter key made for each day, so a regular player will meet a quote again within a few weeks, though in a different code. Hard mode adds 16 longer, less familiar quotes to the mix.
The daily quote and the unlimited practice mode are free and need no sign-up. Puzzle Theory Pro, a paid plan with a 7-day trial, opens the Hard mode, a 30-day archive of past puzzles and synced streaks, and removes ads; the free page loads Google AdSense. A leaderboard for the day sits beside the puzzle.
Cipher suits players who like newspaper cryptograms and want one short quote a day in the browser, with letters rather than numbers as the code.
How to play Cipher
- Open Cipher on Puzzle Theory and stay on the Daily tab for the day's quote.
- Look at the coded line: two letters are already given to get you started.
- Click the box under a coded letter and type the real letter you think it stands for; it fills in everywhere that letter appears.
- Use short words, doubled letters and repeated words to test and change your guesses; each real letter can be used only once.
- Keep going until every letter matches the quote and the puzzle solves itself.
- Switch to Practice for more quotes, or come back after 00:00 UTC for the next daily.

Tips
- A coded letter standing alone as a word is almost always A or I.
- Three-letter words that repeat in a quote are often THE or AND.
- A doubled coded letter is most likely LL, SS, EE or OO.
- Fill in what the two given letters reveal first; they often finish a short word for you.
Questions
What time does Cipher reset?
A new quote appears every day at 00:00 UTC, the same for every player. The page counts down to the next one.
Is Cipher free?
Yes. The daily quote and the practice mode are free with no account. Puzzle Theory Pro, a paid plan, adds a Hard mode, the last 30 days of puzzles and removes ads.
Can two coded letters stand for the same real letter?
No. The code is one-to-one, so giving a real letter to a new coded letter removes it from the old one.
Do the quotes repeat?
They can. The Normal daily is picked by the date from a set of 35 well-known quotes, but each day has its own letter key, so a quote that comes back is coded differently.
