Three events a day: pin them on a 3D globe and place them in time.

Play Whenere

on whenere.net

Whenere's first round of the day: the Battle of Waterloo described at the top, a 3D satellite globe to pin it on, and a century picker below

Whenere gives you three historical events each day, each described in a short text. For each one you drop a pin on a 3D globe and pick a date on a timeline, and you score for how close you get on both. The daily needs no account; signing in adds a timed mode, practice and flag mode.

About Whenere

Whenere is a daily history and geography game. Each day's challenge has three rounds, and each round names a historical event with a sentence or two about it, such as the Battle of Waterloo or the adoption of the Kyoto Protocol. You turn a satellite globe to find the place and drop a pin, then choose the date you think it happened.

The date picker has three styles: an arc, a precise slider, or steps that narrow it down from century to decade, year, month and day. After each round you see where and when the event really took place, how far off you were and the points for each part. At the end of the day you get a total and a share line, and a streak counts the days you play in a row. A hint button and a zoom hint help on a hard round, and coins from play buy more of them.

Beyond the daily there are Period Events, where you guess where something started and where it ended, a weekly theme when one is running, and, for signed-in players, a timed challenge, practice with last week's events, a flag mode and rooms to play against friends. The game's event texts are written in English, Spanish, Portuguese and French.

It suits players of Geopoch, WhenTaken or TimeGuessr who prefer events described in words to photographs, and anyone who likes working on a globe more than a flat map.

How to play Whenere

  1. Open whenere.net and press Play Today's Challenge.
  2. Read the event named at the top of the screen for the first round.
  3. Turn and zoom the globe, then tap to drop a pin where you think it happened.
  4. Pick a date: in the steps style choose the century, then the decade, year, month and day.
  5. Press Confirm Guess to see the real place and date and your points.
  6. Play the other two rounds, then compare or share your total for the day.

Tips

  • Zoom the globe in before pinning: distance counts, and a few hundred kilometres matter.
  • Place and time score separately, so commit to your best guess on each even if one is shaky.
  • Switch the timeline to the precise style in the menu if you already know the year.
  • Keep the hint and zoom hint for the round you know least; they are limited.
