MapTap is a daily geography game: you get five places a day and tap where you think each one is on a 3D globe, scoring by distance. Each place comes with a short story about something that happened there on this day in history, and the harder late rounds count double or triple.
About MapTap
MapTap is a geography game played on a 3D globe in the browser and in apps for iPhone and Android. Each daily game, numbered from the first on 21 June 2024, picks five locations linked to events that happened on this day in history. The game names a place, such as a city or a country to tap anywhere inside, and you spin and zoom the globe and tap where you think it is.
Your tap is scored by its distance from the target: the score falls away steeply as the gap grows, and anything over about 16,000 km scores nothing. The rounds get harder as you go, and later ones carry a multiplier of two or three, so the best possible day is 1,000 points. After each tap, a short note tells the story behind the place: an unexpected hero, a discovery or a turning point.
The day turns over at midnight in your own time zone, or at midnight UTC if you switch that on in the settings. Results go on global leaderboards, with streaks and badges, and the share text gives your score without the answers. Outside the daily game there are practice maps: short, medium and long sets for the day, picture clues, a flag finder, and every country or capital by continent. Players can also make and share their own maps.
The daily game is free, and the Google Play listing says it shows no ads to anyone. MapTap+ is an optional subscription. It adds sharper satellite imagery on the globe, the full set of practice maps, private groups, the last 90 days of missed games and a Best of MapTap collection.
Beyond the five daily places there is now a lot more to do. Find the Flag is a daily of its own, and Gauntlet sends everyone through the same timed run of locations each day. Frontier ends at the first bad guess. Versus pits you against another player over five locations with a rating that carries over, and practice maps retrace journeys such as Magellan's expedition or Darwin's voyage on the Beagle. The game plays in 12 languages. It suits players who like Worldle or Globle but want to place cities and countries precisely, with some history in each round.

Tips
- The last rounds are worth two or three times as much, so take more care over them than over the first.
- When asked to tap inside a country, aim for its middle rather than a border.
- Zoom in before tapping a city: a few hundred kilometres makes a large difference to the score.
- Use the practice maps of countries and capitals by continent to fill gaps before they come up in the daily.
