Timdle Music round in progress: the starting card Scatman by Scatman John (1994) on the timeline with Earlier and Later drop points, and a Mystery song card with a play button below

Timdle Music is the music edition of the Timdle timeline game. Each day it plays clips from nine songs, one already on the line, and you slot the other eight in by the year they came out. You never name the track or the artist, only when it was released.

About Timdle Music

Timdle Music takes the idea of the Timdle history timeline and applies it to pop records. Each day brings a set of nine songs from every decade, from classic throwbacks to recent chart hits. One song sits on the timeline at the start, and the other eight arrive one at a time.

For each song a clip plays, and you drop it between the songs already placed. There is no list of years and no multiple choice: you judge by ear, from the production, the instruments and the singing style as much as from memory. You must place the current song correctly before moving on, and each wrong placement costs a point, so a clean round scores highest.

The set changes at midnight in your own time zone, so there is one round a day and a streak to keep. It needs no account. The same site has the original history timeline, a maths sorting puzzle and community timelines.

How to play Timdle Music

  1. Listen to the clip of the current song.
  2. Drop it on the timeline where you think its release year falls, between the songs already placed.
  3. If it is wrong, try another spot; each miss costs a point.
  4. Place all eight songs to finish the day's set, then come back after midnight for the next nine.

Tips

  • Listen for the recording itself: drum machines, synths, guitar tone and vocal effects date a song well.
  • Place the songs you are sure of first in your head, then fit the harder ones between them.
  • Remember that a cover or a revival hit can sound older than its release year.
