Quintagram is a daily word puzzle from The Times: five crossword-style clues with their answer lengths, and below them every letter of all five answers jumbled together in alphabetical order. You solve the clues using each letter exactly once. It comes in a concise version with straight clues and a cryptic one with wordplay, and needs a Times subscription.
About The Times Quintagram
Quintagram is a small crossword without a grid. You get five clues, each with the length of its answer, and underneath them a block of letters: every letter of all five answers, sorted into alphabetical order. The task is to solve the five clues so that, between them, the answers use up every letter in the block exactly once.
Because the letters are pooled, it is not five separate anagrams. Each answer you find crosses its letters off and narrows down what the others can be, so the last clue or two often fall out from the letters that are left. On days when you know all five answers at once, the pool is a check that you have them right.
The Times publishes two versions under the same number each day from Monday to Saturday, six a week. The Concise Quintagram has plain definitions, and the Cryptic Quintagram has wordplay clues in the style of a cryptic crossword. Solvers on puzzle forums have noted that the five answers often share a hidden theme, though the puzzle does not ask you to find it.
On the web the answers are typed into boxes under each clue while the pool below crosses off each letter used, with a Shuffle button to rearrange what is left. Recent days stay in the two-week archive of The Times puzzles page and app, and the paper has also collected the puzzles in books. Access online needs a Times subscription.
How to play The Times Quintagram
- Open the day's Concise or Cryptic Quintagram on The Times puzzles page or app.
- Read the five clues and note each answer's length.
- Solve the clues you can, and cross the letters of each answer off the shared pool.
- Use the letters left in the pool to crack the remaining clues.
- Finish when all five answers are in and every letter has been used exactly once.
- Try the other version of the same number for a second puzzle.
Tips
- Start with the concise version if you are new to cryptic clues, then try the cryptic one.
- Count rare letters in the pool such as J, Q, X, Z and K; they tell you a lot about which answers contain them.
- When two answers are left, the remaining letters must split exactly between them, which often settles both.
- Look for a theme among your first answers; it can point to the others.
Questions
Do I need a subscription to play The Times Quintagram?
Yes. The Times puts its puzzles behind a subscription, either a Puzzles subscription or full digital access.
What is the difference between the Concise and Cryptic Quintagram?
Both use the same format. The Concise version has straight definitions as clues; the Cryptic version has wordplay clues like a cryptic crossword.
Is a Quintagram five anagrams?
Not quite. All the answers' letters are pooled together, so you have to work out which letters belong to which answer as you solve.
Is there a new Quintagram every day?
A new numbered one comes out each day from Monday to Saturday, in a concise and a cryptic version. There is none on Sunday.
