Statedoku board for 19 October 2026: labels Top 5 largest by area, Capital starts with S, 6-letter name over Borders 3 or fewer states, Mountain West, Plains farm state

Statedoku is a daily US geography grid. Each row and column has a label, such as Mountain West or Capital starts with S, and each of the nine cells needs a different state that fits both. You get five mistakes a day, and past grids are in an archive.

About Statedoku

Statedoku crosses the grid of sudoku with the map of the United States. Each day brings one 3x3 grid with three labels down the left and three across the top, like Mountain West, Top 5 largest by area or 6-letter name. Every cell wants a state that answers both of its labels, and no state may appear twice.

Any state that fits both labels is accepted, not just one stored answer. That means you can spend a state that another cell needed, so filled cells stay open: tap one and clear it. A wrong pick costs one of five mistakes, shown as dots at the top, and after the fifth the grid locks and shows the solution. Each grid is checked to have one complete solution, so it can be finished by reasoning about the states rather than guessing.

The grid is built from the date, so everyone sees the same puzzle and can compare a Wordle-style share grid. Statedoku plays in English, French and Spanish, needs no account and keeps your stats and streak in your browser. An archive calendar lets you play any past day, teachers can post the day's grid to Google Classroom, and the site adds reference pages, quizzes and a printable US map for learning the states.

It is made by a solo developer in France who goes by Moses Tounby, and it launched in 2026.

Tips

  • Fill the most constrained cells first: a cell with only one possible state should never wait.
  • Start from the narrow label, such as Top 5 largest by area, and filter by the loose one.
  • Clearing a filled cell costs no mistake, so move a state if another cell needs it more.
  • Count the dots at the top: they are the mistakes you have left.
