Stackdown Daily Stack #586 on a desktop: a pile of overlapping letter tiles with the uncovered X, F, T and C lit on top, five empty word slots and the swipe-to-reveal hint bar

Stackdown is a daily word puzzle from Puzzlist, the makers of Waffle. A pile of overlapping letter tiles hides a series of five-letter words. You pick exposed tiles into five slots to spell each word, uncovering more tiles as you go, until the stack is gone. Fewer hints mean a better star score.

About Stackdown

Stackdown comes from Puzzlist, the small studio behind Waffle and One Word Search. Each day there is one numbered stack, the same for every player.

The stack is a heap of overlapping letter tiles. Only tiles that are not covered can be picked. Tapping one moves it into the row of five slots below, which may expose tiles underneath. Fill all five slots with a valid word and those tiles are gone for good; an invalid word sends them back. The puzzle is built so that at each point there is only one possible word to find, so the challenge is spotting it among the exposed letters.

If you are stuck, you can swipe to reveal a hint, but your star score depends on how few hints you use. A timer records how long each word and the whole stack took; it is hidden by default and does not affect the stars.

Past stacks can be played from the archive in the menu, a statistics panel keeps your streak and total stars, and a result can be shared as a line of stars with your time. The game runs in the browser on a phone or a desktop with no sign-up; a banner ad sits below the hint bar.

It suits Waffle fans and anyone who likes anagram hunting with a bit of order-of-operations thinking.

How to play Stackdown

  1. Look at the exposed letter tiles on top of the stack.
  2. Tap tiles to move them into the five slots and spell a word.
  3. Complete a valid five-letter word to remove those tiles and expose new ones.
  4. Repeat until the whole stack is cleared, using as few hints as possible.

Tips

  • There is only ever one valid word available, so look for it among the exposed tiles only.
  • Tap a slotted tile to put it back if a word is not working.
  • Save hints: they lower your star score, while the timer does not.
  • Picking a tile can uncover the one beneath it, so try the bright top tiles first to see what lies under them.

Questions

Is there a new stack every day?

Yes. Each Daily Stack is numbered and the same for everyone.

How is it scored?

Stars depend on how many hints you use. A timer is also kept but does not change your stars.

Who makes it?

Puzzlist, which also makes Waffle and One Word Search.

Can I play past stacks?

Yes. The menu has an archive of earlier Daily Stacks, and your results there are kept with the rest.

Does Stackdown have ads?

Yes. The free game shows a banner ad below the board on a phone and on a desktop. It does not cover the tiles.
