Squint is a daily city guessing game from the travel app NomadMates. You get three photos of the same city, one cropped, one pixelated and one blurred, and five guesses to name it. Every miss sharpens all three photos, unlocks a hint and shows how far off you were and which way to go.
About Squint
Squint gives you one city a day and three photos of it. Each photo is obscured in its own way: one is a crop of the scene, one is pixelated and one is blurred. On a desktop the three sit stacked beside the guess box; on a phone you swipe between them, and any of them opens full screen so you can zoom in and pan around, looking for a skyline, a sign, a style of building or a stretch of coast that gives the place away.
You have five guesses, typed and picked from a list of cities. Every wrong guess makes all three photos clearer and unlocks a hint, such as the continent. Your guess also shows a distance band, for example 1,250 to 2,500 km, and an arrow pointing toward the answer, so a miss still narrows the map. When the round ends the full photo is shown with its credit, your guesses, a Copy result button and a countdown to the next city.
Squint arrived in the NomadMates app for iOS and Android in August 2026, and the same round is free on the web with no account. In the app you can also go back to a day you missed and keep a streak. The round follows your own calendar date, so it changes at midnight where you are. It suits players who like photo geography games such as WhereTaken or Citle and want a city rather than a country.
How to play Squint
- Open Squint and press Play to load the day's three photos.
- Look over the cropped, pixelated and blurred photos; on a phone swipe between them, and open any one full screen to zoom and pan.
- Type a city name, pick it from the list and press Guess.
- If you miss, all three photos get sharper, a hint unlocks, and your guess shows its distance from the answer and an arrow toward it.
- Name the city within five guesses, then copy your result to share it.

Tips
- Use the first guess on a big city in the region you suspect: the distance band and arrow then tell you how far and which way to move.
- Open the cropped photo full screen; signs, plates, plants and building materials survive the crop.
- Compare all three photos before guessing, since each one hides different things and the blurred one still shows colours and the shape of the land.
- Read the hint that unlocks after a miss before your next guess, and stay inside the continent it names.
Questions
When is there a new Squint?
Every day. The round follows your device's date, so a new city arrives at midnight where you are, and the end screen counts down to it.
How many guesses do I get?
Five. Each miss sharpens all three photos, unlocks a hint and shows how far your guess is from the answer, with an arrow toward it.
Is Squint in an app?
Yes. It is part of the NomadMates travel app on iOS and Android, where you can also play a day you missed and keep a streak. It is free on the web with no account.
Does Squint have ads?
No. The web game shows no ads, and the NomadMates app says it has no third-party ads.
