Squared Away official art: a small crossword grid with the starter letters D, M, A, L across the top and B, E, F, P down the left side, the rest empty

Squared Away is a Puzzle Society mini crossword with a twist: two small grids sit side by side and their clues come mixed in one list, so part of the puzzle is working out which answers go where. Starter letters in each grid help you place them. A new one comes each day on GoComics, with a subscription.

About Squared Away

Squared Away is one of the Puzzle Society games from Andrews McMeel Universal, played on the GoComics puzzle pages. GoComics sums it up as a mini crossword that is doubly puzzling: two grids side by side and two sets of clues all mixed together.

Each grid is small, about the size of a newspaper mini, and some of its letters are given from the start. In the game's art, a grid has D, M, A and L across its top edge and B, E, F and P down its side, so each answer's first letter is already there. The clues, though, are not labelled by grid or by position. Solving a clue is only half the job; the other half is working out which grid and which row or column it belongs in, from its length, its first letter and the answers that cross it.

That extra layer makes it slower than a plain mini but more of a logic exercise, and the grids fill quickly once a few answers are placed.

Squared Away came to GoComics when the Puzzle Society closed and moved its 34 games there, each with a new level every day and its full archive. It is included with a GoComics Premium subscription, which is ad-free, along with the Puzzle Society's other mini crossword, PlayFour!, and its other daily games.

How to play Squared Away

  1. Open Squared Away on the GoComics puzzles page and sign in with a GoComics subscription.
  2. Look at the two grids and the starter letters already placed in each.
  3. Read the mixed list of clues and solve the ones you are surest of.
  4. Place each answer in the grid and row or column where its first letter and length fit.
  5. Use the crossing letters of placed answers to sort out the rest, until both grids are full.

Tips

  • Match answers to starter letters first: a clue whose answer begins with P can only go where a P is given.
  • Keep a short list of answers you have solved but not placed; crossings settle them later.
  • Fill one grid's across words, then check them against its down clues.

Questions

Is Squared Away free?

No. On GoComics it is one of the Puzzle Society games included with a GoComics Premium subscription, which is also ad-free.

What makes Squared Away different from a mini crossword?

There are two grids, and their clues are mixed together in one list, so you have to work out where each answer goes as well as what it is.

Can I play past Squared Away puzzles?

Yes. The Puzzle Society's move notice says every one of its 34 games kept its whole archive on GoComics.
