Today's Daily Squardle board after two guesses, with a green T, yellow and red arrow hints and small letter notes on the 5x5 grid

Squardle is a daily Wordle variation where you solve a 5x5 grid of six interlocking words. Each guess gives coloured hints that tell you not just whether a letter is in the word, but whether it belongs in the same row, the same column or elsewhere on the board.

About Squardle

Squardle is a free browser game by FubarGames.se, a one-person studio in Sweden, running since February 2022. Every day there is a new Daily Squardle, the same board for everyone and numbered from the game's first day, and each Sunday a harder Weekly Squardle. A freeplay mode, a speedrun mode and the larger XL and XXL boards are there for players who want more.

The board is a 5x5 grid holding six five-letter words: three across and three down, crossing each other, with four holes between them. Each guess is typed into a row and a column at once. Green means the letter is in the right square and stays there. Yellow, red and orange mean the letter is not in that square but is elsewhere in the same row, the same column or both, shown with arrows. White means it is somewhere else on the board, and black means it is not on the board at all.

You start with ten guesses and earn a bonus guess for each of the first five words you solve; solving the sixth word wins. Because every hint is about position on the grid rather than within one word, the game is as much about keeping track of where letters can and cannot go as it is about vocabulary. Settings let you fade used hints, mark notes on squares and switch to a dark mode.

The word lists come in English, Swedish, German, Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese, though the screens and rules stay in English. The game and site carry no ads; the maker is funded by Patreon supporters, who also get bonus weekly boards. It suits Wordle players who want a longer, meatier daily, and anyone who likes juggling many constraints at once.

How to play Squardle

  1. Open Squardle and choose Daily Squardle from the menu.
  2. Type a five-letter word; it is entered along a row and a column of the 5x5 grid.
  3. Read the hints: green is right, yellow, red and orange point along the row or column, white is elsewhere on the board, black is not on it.
  4. Solve words to earn bonus guesses on top of your starting ten.
  5. Solve all six words before your guesses run out, then share your result.

Tips

  • Guess in the middle row and column early, since they cross every other word.
  • Black letters are out of the whole board, so rule them out everywhere.
  • Use the arrow hints to place a letter in the crossing word, not just the one you guessed.
