The Sqordle board for Today's Pokemon Challenge: an empty six-letter, six-row guess grid with 6 attempts left above an on-screen keyboard

Sqordle is Wordle played with Pokémon names. Each day's answer is a Pokémon from generations one to nine with a five to seven letter name, every guess must itself be a Pokémon, and the tiles turn colour to show right letters in the right or wrong place. A Training Arena gives unlimited practice words.

About Sqordle

Sqordle is Wordle played with Pokemon names, made by One Day Software. Each day it hides one Pokemon, the same for every player, and you have six tries to spell its name. The twist on Wordle is that both the answer and every guess you type have to be a real Pokemon, drawn from all nine generations, with a name between five and seven letters long.

The feedback works just like Wordle. After each guess the tiles colour in: green for a letter in the right place, yellow for a letter that is in the Pokemon's name but in the wrong place, and grey for a letter that is not in it at all. Because the grid stretches to seven columns, the length of the answer is itself a clue, and because guesses must be valid Pokemon, you spend your tries on names you know rather than any dictionary word.

Alongside the daily there is a Training Arena that serves unlimited practice Pokemon so you can warm up or keep playing after the day's puzzle. The game runs in the browser, keeps your stats and streak, and resets at midnight Eastern time. It is free and carries ads.

It suits Pokemon fans who also like Wordle: knowing the roster across generations matters as much as letter logic, since a good guess has to be a Pokemon in the first place.

How to play Sqordle

  1. Type the name of a Pokemon (five to seven letters) and press Enter; each guess must be a real Pokemon.
  2. Read the tile colours: green is a correct letter in place, yellow is in the name but misplaced, grey is not in the name.
  3. Note the grid length, which tells you how many letters the answer has.
  4. Use the clues to narrow down which Pokemon fits, across generations one to nine.
  5. Name the day's Pokemon within six guesses, or practise more in the Training Arena.

Tips

  • Open with a longer Pokemon that uses common letters to test several positions at once.
  • Let the grid width guide you: a seven-cell answer rules out all the shorter names.
  • Since guesses must be real Pokemon, keep a mental list by generation to always have a valid word to play.
  • Use the Training Arena to practise without spending the day's six guesses.

Questions

Do my guesses have to be Pokemon?

Yes. Both the answer and every guess must be a real Pokemon name, five to seven letters, from generations one to nine.

How many guesses do I get?

Six, with Wordle-style colour feedback on each.

What do the colours mean?

Green is a correct letter in the right place, yellow is a letter in the name but in the wrong place, and grey is a letter not in the name.

Can I practise?

Yes. The Training Arena gives unlimited practice Pokemon outside the daily puzzle.

When does it reset?

At midnight Eastern time, with a new Pokemon each day shared by everyone.
