Today's Morsle on DECIPHER after a first guess, CRANE, typed in Morse: A shows yellow, the rest grey, and the same colours mark those letters in the Morse chart at left

Morsle is a daily word game on the DECIPHER codebreaking site. You have six guesses to find a five-letter word, as in Wordle, but you enter each letter in Morse code with dot and dash keys; green, yellow and grey tiles show how close you are.

About Morsle (Decipher)

Morsle takes the familiar Wordle rules and adds a layer of code. The hidden word has five letters and you get six guesses, each of which must be a valid English word. The difference is input: instead of a keyboard of letters, you have a dot key, a dash key, backspace and Enter. You tap out each letter in Morse (dot dash for A, dash dot dot dot for B, and so on) and press Enter to turn it into a letter.

After each guess the tiles colour in the usual way: green for the right letter in the right place, yellow for a letter in the word but in the wrong place, grey for a letter not in the word. A Morse chart sits beside the board, and its letters take the same colours as your guesses, so it doubles as a used-letters keyboard. Confident players can hide the chart for an extra challenge. Below the keys the page shows today's average number of guesses across all players. You can play without an account; players who log in to DECIPHER also keep a streak.

The day's word is picked from a list of 2,309 answer words by a hash of the local date, so everyone playing on the same date gets the same word. Morsle is part of DECIPHER (decipher.wiki), a site of cipher tools, puzzles and lessons for codebreakers. It suits Wordle players who want a twist and anyone learning Morse code.

Tips

  • Start with common letters that are short in Morse, such as E (.) and T (-), to save effort.
  • Keep the chart visible until the codes for vowels and common consonants come naturally.
  • Hide the Morse translation once you know the alphabet, for a harder game.
  • Watch the Morse chart: letters you have tried turn green, yellow or grey there too, so you can see which codes are still worth tapping.
  • Use the same Wordle strategy as usual: test new letters early, then narrow down.

Questions

Is Morsle the same word for everyone?

Yes. The word is chosen from a list using the date, so all players on the same date get the same word.

Do I need to know Morse code?

No. A Morse chart is shown next to the board, and you can hide it later as a challenge.

How many guesses do I get?

Six, and every guess must be a valid five-letter English word.

What time does Morsle reset?

At midnight on your own device's clock. The page takes the word from your local date, so a new word arrives at your midnight, not at a single time worldwide.

Do I need an account to play Morsle?

No. The daily word plays without signing in. A DECIPHER account adds a streak to your results.
