MapGame's daily board on a phone after two guesses, Brazil and China shaded on the world map, with three hints below: in Asia, larger than Liberia, east of Guinea

MapGame is a daily geography game in which everyone hunts for the same hidden country. You guess by clicking on a world map, and each guess unlocks a new hint about the answer. Points depend on whether you found it, how many hints you used, how fast you were and how well your guesses matched the hints.

About MapGame

MapGame gives the whole world one mystery country each day. You press Start to get a first hint, then guess by clicking a country on a map you can drag and zoom; on a phone a country picker list helps with small countries. Every guess, right or wrong, earns a new hint about the hidden country, and you have up to ten guesses to find it.

Scoring rewards more than the final answer. You get points for finding the country, for using fewer hints, for speed, and for how closely each guess fits the hints shown so far, so a wrong guess that matches every clue still earns plenty. A share grid lets you compare results with friends.

Beyond the daily game there is a Practice mode with unlimited random countries and a Ranked mode of three games in a row that feeds a global leaderboard. Strong Ranked players unlock Twists, such as a flipped map, that add bonus points. Twists include Flip, Borderless, Ghosts, Ephemeral and Nameless. A Countrydex lets you filter countries by continent, region, language, flag colours, currency and more, and its world map updates with the filters.

The game was made by Minas Giannekas in 2023, who also runs the map-making site MapChart, and there are free iOS and Android apps. The changelog shows regular updates through 2026, such as the move to the UN's region scheme in July 2026. Scores and history are kept in your browser, with no account needed. It suits geography fans who like reasoning from clues rather than guessing at random.

How to play MapGame

Tips

  • Make early guesses that split the map, such as a large country on another continent.
  • Pick guesses that fit all hints so far: accurate guesses still score points.
  • Fewer hints and a faster finish give a higher score.
  • Use the Countrydex filters between days to learn flags, capitals and regions.
