Hunch Classic on 27 October 2026 at desktop size: lead word ALIVE scored 1 and 1, guesses CRANE and PIOYE with their green and amber counts, and the on-screen keyboard

Hunch is a daily five-letter word game with Mastermind feedback. Beside each guess you see how many letters are in the right place and how many are in the word but misplaced. It never says which letters those are. Classic, Cascade and Doubles boards change every day, scores are set against a par, and the game plays in English, French, Spanish, German, Italian and Portuguese.

About Hunch

Hunch is a daily word game by Bennette Sebastian that swaps Wordle's coloured letters for the counts of Mastermind. The answer is a five-letter word. After each guess the game shows two numbers: a green one for letters in the right place and an amber one for letters that are in the word but sit elsewhere. It never says which letters earned them, so the puzzle is working that out across your guesses.

Every board starts with a lead word already played and scored, so you have a first clue before you type anything. Guesses are not capped. Instead each daily has a par, the average number of guesses it takes (8.5 for today's Classic in English), and you try to finish under it. Letters can be marked on the keyboard as ruled in or out, and a pencil tool helps keep track of what you have deduced. A word the game does not know is refused with a cross and does not count.

There are three dailies. Classic is the single hidden word. Cascade chains several words into one longer run with a points score and its own par. Doubles is one word shared by two players passing a device between turns. Four difficulty tiers change how hard the daily plays, and an interactive tutorial teaches how to read the counts. A calendar holds the last month of boards, and signing in adds stats, streaks, leaderboards and Rivals, a live head-to-head mode.

The game runs in six languages, each with its own word list and keyboard layout: English (US and UK spellings), French, Spanish, German, Italian and Brazilian Portuguese. It suits players who find Wordle too easy and like a slower solve built on deduction.

How to play Hunch

  1. Read the lead word at the top of the board and its two counts.
  2. Type a five-letter word and press the arrow to submit it as a guess.
  3. Read the green number, the letters in the right place, and the amber number, the letters in the word but misplaced.
  4. Compare the counts across your guesses to work out which letters are in the word and where.
  5. Mark letters on the keyboard as ruled in or out as you go.
  6. Find the word in as few guesses as you can and compare your total with the day's par.

Tips

  • Open with words that share letters so a changing count tells you exactly which letter moved.
  • Mark the keyboard as you go. With only numbers for feedback, a note of what you ruled out saves working it out again.
  • Change one letter at a time when you are close, so each new count points at one letter.
  • A guess that scores zero on both counts is useful. It rules out five letters at once.
  • Start with the tutorial if the numbers are new to you.

Questions

How is Hunch different from Wordle?

You get counts instead of colours. Each guess shows how many letters are in the right place and how many are misplaced, but never which ones, so you deduce the letters yourself.

What do the two numbers mean?

The green number counts letters in the correct position. The amber number counts letters that are in the word but in the wrong position.

How many guesses do I get?

There is no limit. Each daily has a par, the usual number of guesses it takes, and you try to beat it.

What modes are there?

Classic is one hidden word a day. Cascade links several words into a scored run. Doubles is one word for two players taking turns on one device. Signed-in players can also play Rivals live against others.

When does the daily change?

At midnight on your device, since the game picks the board by your device's date.

Can I play past days?

Yes. The calendar in the menu holds the last month of boards.

Which languages can I play in?

English (US or UK), French, Spanish, German, Italian and Brazilian Portuguese, each with its own words and keyboard.

Does it cost anything?

No. Hunch is free in the browser, and the daily needs no account.
