Grid Words is a daily word grid with no clues. Every row and column of a 5x5 grid is a word, and you fill cells letter by letter; each letter is coloured to show whether it is right, in the same row or column, elsewhere in the puzzle, or used up. Guesses stack in each cell so you can look back at what you tried.
About Grid Words
Grid Words, made by Jeff Schomay, describes itself as Sudoku meets Wordle meets crosswords. The goal is to put the right letter in every cell of a small crossword grid, where each horizontal row and vertical column forms a word; some may be several words run together, an abbreviation or a proper noun.
Instead of clues, the game gives colour feedback on every letter you place. Teal means the letter is in the right spot, orange means it belongs somewhere in that row or column but not this cell, red means it is elsewhere in the puzzle but not in this row or column, and grey means there are no more of that letter left. Each guess stacks on top of earlier ones in the cell, and you can rotate the stack to see what was underneath. The keyboard also colours keys to show untried letters, used-up letters and letters ruled out for the selected cell.
Each day's grid is chosen by the date from a set of 300 numbered puzzles that began on 16 July 2026, so everyone gets the same puzzle. The grids were generated with a tool called mini-gen from the Collaborative Word List. A move counter and a timer run while you play, and a Share button copies your result when you finish. It suits players who like Wordle's feedback and Waffle's crossing words but want to build the grid from scratch.
How to play Grid Words
- Click a cell or move to it with the arrow keys.
- Type a letter or use the on-screen keyboard.
- Read the colour: teal is right, orange is in this row or column, red is elsewhere in the grid, grey is used up.
- Use the keyboard colours to rule letters in or out for the selected cell.
- Fill the whole grid so every row and column is a word.

Tips
- Start with common vowels in the middle cells; they touch two words each.
- Use orange letters to work out which of the two words through a cell they belong to.
- Rotate a cell's stack to remember what you already tried there.
- Remember rows can be abbreviations or proper nouns, not just dictionary words.
Questions
Is it the same puzzle for everyone?
Yes. The puzzle is picked by the date from a set of 300 numbered grids, so every player gets the same one that day.
Are there clues?
No. Feedback comes only from the colours of the letters you place.
What counts as a word?
Usually a normal word, but some rows or columns may be several words with no spaces, an abbreviation or a proper noun.
Is there a limit on guesses?
No. A move counter and a timer track how you did, but you can keep placing letters until the grid is full.
