Escalatle is a daily word game where a turtle climbs down a staircase built from words. Each step must use every letter of the word above plus one more, rearranged into a new word. Pick one of three difficulties and come back each day for a new turtle.
About Escalatle
Escalatle, by CanalWeasel, is played in the browser on itch.io. The story is simple: the turtles want to get down, but they can only step on valid words. The staircase starts with a short set of letters at the top, and each new row is one tile longer than the one above it.
To build the next step you type a word that contains every letter of the previous word plus one new letter, in any order. In the example on the page, the steps run ALW, BAWL, ABLOW, BARLOW, ROWABLE, WORKABLE and WORKTABLE, so the turtle walks down a ten-tile staircase. A word that is not valid, or that leaves out one of the letters from the step above, turns red and costs one of your five hearts.
There are three difficulties, and the screenshots show staircases of different lengths, from a short climb to five-letter words to one that ends in a ten-letter word. When the last step is filled, the turtle reaches the ground and the game says the turtles are safe for today. A countdown tells you when the next turtle lands, since a new challenge is set each day. An on-screen keyboard makes it playable by mouse or touch as well as with a keyboard, and there is a guide screen explaining the rules.
On 26 October 2026 the Normal board began with ALS on the top step and ran down to a seven-letter word four rows below. SALT, SLATE, PASTEL and PLASTER were enough to bring the turtle to the ground with all five hearts left. It is a Unity game. On a phone, itch.io warns that the game is not designed for the device, and the board runs wider than a phone screen.
How to play Escalatle
- Open Escalatle on itch.io and pick a difficulty.
- Look at the letters on the top step.
- Type a word that uses all of those letters plus one more, in any order, and press Enter.
- Keep adding one letter per step until the staircase reaches the ground.
- Avoid invalid words: each one costs a heart, and you have five.

Tips
- Common endings such as -ED, -ER, -LE and -ABLE make it easier to add a letter to a longer word.
- Before typing, check that every letter from the step above is in your word.
- Plurals are tempting, but adding S can make the next step harder to extend.
