The Echo Chess Daily Classic for Oct 18, 2026 by Jazzlorde: a white bishop and pawn on an irregular board with black king, rooks, knights, bishop and pawn, with lives, captures and moves counters

Echo Chess is a daily chess puzzle with one twist: you are what you eat. You move a single white piece around a small board full of black pieces, and every capture turns your piece into the piece it took. The goal is to clear the board. Each day brings a new dated Classic level and a harder "Epic" level, the same for everyone.

About Echo Chess

Echo Chess plays on small, often irregular boards rather than the full 8x8. You control one white piece and the board is scattered with black pieces, plus blocked squares. Black never moves. Your piece moves by normal chess rules, but whenever it captures, it takes on the identity of what it captured: take a knight and you now move like a knight, take a pawn and you move like a pawn. The puzzle is to find an order of captures that clears every black piece without leaving yourself stranded.

The home page shows the day's date and four main modes. Classic is the daily level, and "Epic" is the hardest puzzle of the day; both reset every 24 hours and are the same for every player. Some daily levels are credited to community level makers, such as the Oct 18, 2026 Classic by Jazzlorde. Blitz is an endless run of generated puzzles against the clock, and Duels pits two players against each other. The first Classic opens with a short tutorial. On the board you get lives, a capture counter, a move counter, undo and a hint button, and stars and achievements reward clearing a level in the fewest moves. There are leaderboards for Classic and "Epic". Playing today's levels needs no account; logging in opens every past Daily Classic and "Daily Epic".

It suits chess players who enjoy calculation and route planning more than openings and endgames, and puzzle fans who know how the pieces move.

How to play Echo Chess

  1. Open Echo Chess and choose Classic for today's daily level, or "Epic" for the harder one.
  2. Drag your white piece to a square it can reach with a normal chess move. Black pieces never move.
  3. Capture a black piece: your piece now becomes that type of piece.
  4. Plan the order of captures so you can always reach the next target. Use undo or try again if you get stuck.
  5. Clear every black piece from the board to solve the level, in as few moves as you can for more stars.

Tips

  • Work backwards: decide which piece you want to be at the end and what it needs to capture last.
  • Avoid turning into a pawn early unless the remaining pieces are right in front of you.
  • Queens and rooks give the most freedom, so save captures that turn you into them for when you need range.
  • Watch for blocked squares; they cut off lines that look open.

Questions

Is it the same puzzle for everyone?

Yes. The Daily Classic and "Daily Epic" are fetched from the server by date, so all players get the same boards.

What does you are what you eat mean?

Each time your piece captures, it changes into the piece it captured and moves like it from then on.

Can I play earlier days?

Yes. Past Daily Classic and "Daily Epic" levels are in an archive, which needs a login.

Is there more than the daily?

Yes. Blitz is an endless run of generated puzzles against the clock, and Duels is a head-to-head mode.
