blunder.clinic day #226 at 1500 on a phone: puzzle 1 of 6, easy, a full chess board with White to move and six difficulty circles above it

blunder.clinic is a daily chess puzzle site built around realistic positions rather than flashy tactics. Each day you get six positions matched to your rating, two easy, two medium and two hard, and you look for the best move. Afterwards you can see the move played in the original game and step through the engine's best line.

About blunder.clinic

Most chess puzzles announce that there is a tactic to find. blunder.clinic tries to feel more like a real game, where you do not know whether a position hides a trick. Its positions come from the Lichess game database, picked where players went wrong according to Stockfish, and each is graded with the Maia engine by how likely a player of your strength is to find the best move.

Every day brings six puzzles for your rating band, with bands around 1200, 1500 and 1800: two easy ones that players of your level solve most of the time, two medium ones around a 50 to 70 percent chance, and two hard ones that fewer than half get right. Hard mode shuffles the order and hides the difficulty, so you cannot tell which is the tricky one. An allow retries box, on by default, lets you try a position again after a wrong move.

After each attempt you see your move next to the move played in the original over-the-board game, and a move analysis panel animates the best continuation. You can sign in with Lichess and add your true rating to help the site pick positions at the right level.

It suits club players who want short, honest practice at not throwing away games, and anyone who finds standard tactics puzzles too easy to spot as puzzles.

How to play blunder.clinic

  1. Open blunder.clinic and pick your rating band: 1200, 1500 or 1800, measured in Lichess rapid.
  2. Look at the position and decide on the best move for the side to play; the circles at the top show your place in the day's six.
  3. Play your move on the board by moving the piece.
  4. Compare it with the best move and the move played in the original game, and step through the analysis.
  5. Work through all six of the day's puzzles, then copy your result to share it; try hard mode for a random order with hidden difficulty.

Tips

  • Check every capture and check for both sides before moving; most blunders are a missed reply.
  • Do not assume there is a tactic; sometimes the best move is quiet.
  • Use the move analysis after each puzzle to see why the best line works.
  • Sign in with Lichess and add your rating so the positions match your level.

Questions

How many puzzles are there a day?

Six for each rating band: two easy, two medium and two hard.

When do new puzzles appear?

At midnight UTC.

What does hard mode do?

It shuffles the order and hides each puzzle's difficulty, so it feels more like a real game.

Do I need a Lichess account?

No, but signing in with Lichess lets you add your rating so positions can be matched more finely.

Can I try again after a wrong move?

Yes, while the allow retries box above the board is ticked, which it is by default. Untick it for one try per position.
