Daily Detective board for the Baxter Tower Lantern case: moves and hints counters, the deduction meter for suspect, weapon and motive, and evidence cards

Daily Detective opens a fresh murder mystery every day at midnight UTC. You have ten moves to examine evidence and question the persons of interest, then accuse the killer and name the weapon and motive. The daily case is free with no account; a Premium plan adds moves, hints, harder levels and the archive.

About Daily Detective

Daily Detective is a browser murder mystery with one case a day, the same for everyone. Each case starts with a briefing: an illustrated scene, the victim, the cause and time of death as far as they are known, and the persons of interest with portraits and their roles. On 19 October 2026 the case was Baxter Tower Lantern, the death of an archive director at the foot of a university tower stair.

Once you begin the investigation you have ten moves. Examining a piece of evidence or questioning a suspect costs one move, and each examination opens a written account of what you find. You can flag a clue as important or rule it out, and a notes tab keeps track of what you have learned. A deduction meter follows how close you are to the killer, the weapon and the motive; once each reaches half way you may make your accusation. Two hints are there per case.

The game shows a countdown to the next case, which arrives at midnight UTC, and a stats page and a streak follow how you do. The daily case is played at Easy, free and without an account. A Premium plan ($1.99 a month or $19.99 a year, with an account) adds five moves and two hints to every case, unlocks Medium and Hard difficulty, opens an archive of more than 240 past cases and gives weekly streak saves.

It suits players who like Clue-style mysteries but want something shorter than a novel and less grid-heavy than a logic puzzle: you choose where to spend your moves, and wasting them on the wrong lead is how cases are lost.

How to play Daily Detective

  1. Read the case briefing: the scene, the victim and the persons of interest.
  2. Press Begin Investigation.
  3. Open the Evidence tab and examine items, or the Suspects tab and question people; each costs one of your ten moves.
  4. Flag clues as important or ruled out, and check the Notes tab as you go.
  5. Watch the deduction meter for suspect, weapon and motive; at 50 percent in each you can accuse.
  6. Make your accusation naming the killer, the weapon and the motive.

Tips

  • Read every suspect's role in the briefing first; it tells you who could reach the evidence.
  • Look at the physical evidence before questioning, so you know what to ask about.
  • Keep the two hints for when the meter stalls rather than using them at the start.
