Today's bridj board on 21 October 2026: COMPOST across the top, FERTILE across the bottom, an empty grid between and the rack of letter tiles below

bridj is a daily word puzzle for the browser and iPhone. One word sits across the top of a grid and another across the bottom, and you link them with crossing words built from a rack of letter tiles. Everyone gets the same board each day, with a timed Blitz puzzle beside it.

About bridj

bridj is a word game by Andrew Serb and James Karlsson (jaaamesey on itch.io), with its daily count starting on 1 July 2024. Each puzzle shows two words, one along the top row of a six-column grid and one along the bottom, such as COMPOST and FERTILE. Between them is empty space, and below the grid is a rack of letter tiles, some of them two-letter tiles like EA or IL. You build a bridge by laying words down and across from the top word until it reaches the bottom one.

The rules are tight. Tiles can only go next to tiles already joined to the top word, every run of tiles across and down has to be a real word of three letters or more, and you only get new tiles once everything on the board spells words. Placed tiles earn points, and the total shows as a multiplication at the bottom of the screen. An undo button goes back up to eight moves, and a wild tile stands in for any letter when you are stuck.

Beside the main puzzle there is a daily Blitz, where the time you take counts toward your score and the timer cannot be paused, plus Infinite and Practice modes, a puzzle builder for your own boards and an archive of earlier days. A new puzzle comes at local midnight. bridj plays free in the browser at bridj.link, on itch.io and as a free iPhone app; the web version shows Google ads. An optional login saves progress across devices.

It suits players who like Scrabble-style tile play but want a goal beyond a high score: the board has a start and a finish, and the fun is in finding a route that scores well on the way.

How to play bridj

  1. Open bridj.link (or the app) to load today's puzzle.
  2. Read the word on the top row and the word on the bottom row.
  3. Drag letter tiles from the rack onto squares next to the top word or to tiles already joined to it.
  4. Make sure every run of tiles across and down spells a word of three letters or more; new tiles arrive each time you form one.
  5. Keep building until your words reach the bottom word, then check your score.
  6. Use undo or the wild tile if you hit a dead end.

Tips

  • Use the two-letter tiles where they fit; they cover two squares in one move.
  • Plan a route before placing tiles: a short bridge can leave tiles for bonus words.
  • Save the wild tile for the last gap you cannot fill.
  • Try Practice or the archive to learn how boards tend to open up.
  • Only start the Blitz when you have a few minutes free, since its timer cannot be paused.

Questions

Is the bridj puzzle the same for everyone?

Yes. Everyone gets the same numbered puzzle each day, and the daily Blitz is shared too.

When does a new puzzle come out?

Each day at midnight in your local time.

Is it free?

Yes, in the browser, on itch.io and as a free iPhone app. The web version shows Google ads.

Can I play old puzzles?

Yes, an archive lets you play earlier days, and Infinite and Practice modes give extra boards.

Do puzzles repeat?

The game has two year-long banks of puzzles that take turns, so a board comes back after about two years.
