Betweenle

Betweenle plays like a game of higher or lower with the dictionary. The screen shows a top word and a bottom word with a gap between them, and the secret word sits somewhere in that gap in alphabetical order. You type any valid five-letter word that also fits in the gap. If the answer comes after it, your guess becomes the new top; if before, the new bottom. You have 14 guesses to close the range.

Two extra signals help. An orange dot on the line beside the words shows whether the answer is closer to the top word or the bottom word, and the numbers at each end give the distance as a percentage of the whole dictionary, down to fractions of a percent near the end. A row of letters under the board shows which first letters are still possible. Used well, these let you jump much closer than a plain halving would. Your score falls from 5 to 1 as you use more guesses, and your streak, statistics and a share button sit at the end.

The daily word turns over at midnight in your own time zone and is numbered from 17 March 2023 (Daily #1316 on 22 October 2026). Betweenle is made by Nebula Bytes, with free apps for Android and iPhone that add an unlimited mode and practice. On the web there are also 20 levels and a custom word you can make and send to a friend as a link. The site shows banner ads around the game and the Android app shows short ads between puzzles. It suits players who like a puzzle about spelling and order more than letter colours.
