Today's Animerdle board: six empty guess rows, a segmented audio bar with a play button and a 16 second clip, an anime search box and Skip and Submit buttons

Animerdle plays a short audio clip from an anime and you name the series it comes from, picking it from a list of about 380 shows. Each wrong guess or skip lets you hear more of the 16 second clip, and you have six tries. A new clip comes up each day at your local midnight.

About Animerdle

Animerdle is a daily anime guessing game built like Heardle, but for the sound of anime rather than pop songs. Its about page credits Aria Nakamura as the developer and speaks of a small crew of anime fans behind it. The site's footer dates it from 2022.

Each day there is one mystery clip of 16 seconds. You press play and hear only the opening second or so, then type and pick an anime from the search list. A wrong guess or a skip unlocks a longer part of the track, and the sixth and last try plays the whole clip. When you get it, the page shows the show's cover, its type and airing status, a row of six circles for your tries, and a countdown to the next clip. Your played, won and average-try stats stay in your browser.

The answer list holds about 380 series, from Shingeki no Kyojin and Kimetsu no Yaiba to Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso, under their Japanese titles with English ones for many. Seasons can matter. The FAQ says the clips are chosen so the season is clear, and where a main character points to the first season, only that one counts. A Previous Round button lets you play the clip before today's.

The day's clip comes from a schedule of 72 entries in the game's code, chosen by the day of the year, so a regular player will hear the same clips again every couple of months or so. Next to character dailies such as Narutodle or Onepiecedle, which give written clues about one show's cast, Animerdle tests your ear across many shows. It suits fans who know openings, background music and voices well enough to place a show from a few seconds.

How to play Animerdle

  1. Close the how-to box and press play to hear the opening second of today's clip.
  2. Type part of an anime's name and pick it from the list, then press Submit.
  3. If the guess is wrong, or you press Skip, the next try plays a longer part of the clip.
  4. Keep going until you name the show or use all six tries. The last try plays the whole 16 seconds.
  5. Press Previous Round if you want to play the clip from the day before.

Tips

  • Listen for the kind of sound first. A vocal opening, an instrumental score and a line of dialogue each point to different shows.
  • Search by the Japanese title. Most entries are listed that way, though many also match their English names.
  • Pick the season that fits the sound, since only the right one counts.
  • An early skip costs a try but more than doubles the audio you hear. It can be worth it when the first second is unclear.

Questions

How many guesses do you get in Animerdle?

Six. Each wrong guess or skip plays more of the 16 second clip, and the sixth try plays all of it.

When does the next Animerdle come out?

At midnight on your own device's clock; the site shows a countdown.

Do anime seasons matter?

Partly. The FAQ says clips are chosen so the season is clear, and if a main character only fits the first season, only that season is accepted.

Can I suggest an anime?

Yes. The FAQ asks for requests by email to animerdleofficial@gmail.com.

Is Animerdle in other languages?

Not yet. The FAQ says other languages may come if there is demand.

Do the clips repeat?

Yes, in time. The game's code picks each day's clip from a schedule of 72 entries by the day of the year, so a clip comes round again after about 72 days.
