Games like Heardle: daily song guessing games

Heardle asked you to name a song from its opening seconds, with a longer clip after every miss. Several daily games still work exactly like that, and others name the song from a different clue: the band one instrument at a time, the lyrics, the video, or the year it came out.

The games

The games closest to Heardle keep the growing intro clip. Heardle Daily and ReHeardle play the first two seconds of a popular song and add more with each wrong guess, up to 17 seconds in six tries; ReHeardle also has daily editions for 80s and 90s songs, video game music and movie themes. GuessTheAudio, Muzify Daily and SoundByte work the same way, the last two starting from one second. Songless and Songless at songless.pro start from a fraction of a second; the Lessgames Songless has All, Rock and Hip Hop dailies and sells a subscription whose features include an archive. Heardle Decades runs a whole family of these sorted by decade, chart, genre and artist. Clipingo, an iPhone and iPad app, has a Daily Challenge with one song for everyone, a clip that grows longer and five titles to choose from.

Some keep the format for one artist or one soundtrack. Swiftle does it for Taylor Swift, with clips from anywhere in the song, BTS Heardle for BTS, starting from a lyric line before the clip, and Porter Robinsle for Porter Robinson, five songs a day from half a second of audio. Zelda Heardle and Kingdom Hearts Heed to the Pulse do it for game music, Themedle on DailyJamm for TV theme songs, growing from one second to fifteen over six tries. Animdle plays an anime opening and an anime ending each day, and you name the show, while Animerdle plays one anime audio clip a day that gets longer after each skip or miss, six tries in all. Bollywoodle has a Heardle for Hindi film songs, next to a lyrics puzzle and one played from instrument stems. Humppadle plays a humppa cover by the Finnish band Eläkeläiset and asks for the original song, with a longer clip after each miss up to 30 seconds.

If one song a day is not enough, BLIP gives five songs from a tenth of a second each, from Easy upward, Guess the Song plays five short clips with a bonus for naming the artist, Musicle gives three albums a day in each of its flavours, from Pop and Rock to Jazzle and game music, where you hear a track and pick its album from four, and FlipList Daily plays seven one-second snippets, each with four titles to pick from. Sound of Sliver builds a themed playlist each day and lets you pick each title on a click wheel, faster for more points. Bingle puts nine song clips on a 3x3 bingo card, and you name them to clear lines, while Crosstune is a crossword whose answers each come with a text clue and a song clip to play.

A second group changes the clue. Bandle brings the band in one instrument at a time, starting with the drums. Lyricle reveals the lyrics a line at a time, MusicVidle shows stills from the music video, Strumdle scrolls a Guitar Hero style note chart, and Sampledle plays the original sample and asks which hit used it. Rushdle plays three songs at triple speed and slows them after each miss, and Pitchdle plays three songs out of tune, then asks you to slide each back to its real pitch. Songdle gives you a clip you can replay as often as you like but only one guess at the artist, title and year. Popdle tells you the artist and hides one of their songs; each guess is coloured on year, album, track number, theme and featured artist, with ten tries. In vocalstim, three intros a day fade out before the singing, and you stop the clock when the vocals would come in.

If you would rather think about the music than recognise it, Music Timeliner and Timdle Music ask you to place songs on a timeline by release year, Spotle hides an artist and compares each guess on debut year, popularity and genre, and Harmonies sorts sixteen music tiles into four groups like Connections. Ear-training games such as Perfect Pitch Puzzle and Musoplay ask you to name or play back the notes themselves; Musoplay's daily is free, and a Musoplay+ subscription adds extras.

Start with Heardle Daily or ReHeardle if you miss Heardle, Bandle if you want a fresh way to hear a song, BLIP or FlipList Daily if you want several songs in one sitting, and Spotle if you know artists better than intros.
