ZAPZIPZAP is a small retro arcade game in the style of the Commodore 64. You zip along the diagonal corridors of a maze made of forward and backward slashes, zapping through walls when you need to, without crossing your own trail. A new maze is built from each day's seed, and you chase a best score in Action and Puzzle modes.
About ZAPZIPZAP
ZAPZIPZAP is a free browser game by SebZanardo, who publishes on itch.io as ZEN, with sound by huthuthunter (Hunter Starr). It was made in May 2025 for the Playmakers May Game Jam with raylib, and drawn in the purple, blue and yellow-green palette of a Commodore 64 with chunky pixel lettering. Its source code is public on GitHub.
The playfield is a maze built from diagonal slashes, some leaning forward and some backward, like the classic 10 PRINT pattern. You move only on the diagonals, and each move zips you along a corridor until a slash stops you. You start with eight zaps, shown as lightning bolts down the right edge: moving into a wall spends one and breaks through it, and the yellow dots scattered over the maze give zaps back. You may never cross your own trail, so the run ends when you have boxed yourself in with no zaps left.
The maze comes from a seed that is simply the number of days since the game came out, so everyone who plays on the same UTC day gets the same layout. The title screen shows today's seed and a countdown to the next one. Puzzle mode, marked with a jigsaw piece, lets you take your time and score by how far you get. Action mode, marked with a stopwatch, scrolls the screen under you, adds a bonus for every dot you collect, and ends if you are pushed off the edge. Each mode keeps its own best score in your browser; there is no online leaderboard.
It plays with the arrow keys, WASD or QZOM on a computer, and with swipes and taps on a phone or tablet. It suits players who like short retro arcade runs and a fresh layout to plan around each day.
How to play ZAPZIPZAP
- Open the itch.io page, press Run game, and choose Action (stopwatch) or Puzzle (jigsaw piece) on the title screen.
- Move diagonally with the arrow keys, WASD or QZOM, or by swiping on a touch screen; each move zips you along the corridor until a slash stops you.
- Move into a wall to zap through it, spending one of your zaps; collect the yellow dots to earn zaps back.
- Never cross your own trail: the run ends when you have no move left.
- In Action mode, keep ahead of the scrolling screen so you are not pushed off it.
- Try to beat your best score; a new maze arrives at midnight UTC, when the title screen's countdown ends.

Tips
- The maze is the same all day, so a second attempt lets you plan around the parts that caught you.
- Save zaps for when you are boxed in; a dot nearby is often worth a detour.
- Puzzle mode does not scroll, so it is the place to learn the day's layout before an Action run.
- On a phone, turn it sideways: the maze fills the screen in landscape.
Questions
Is the ZAPZIPZAP maze the same for everyone?
Yes. Each day's maze comes from that day's seed, the number of days since the game's release, which is shown on the title screen, so all players get the same one.
When does a new maze appear?
At midnight UTC. The title screen shows a countdown to the next daily maze.
Is there a leaderboard?
No. Each mode keeps your own best score in your browser.
Can I play on a phone?
Yes. It supports swipes and taps on phones and tablets, as well as the keyboard on a computer. The game is wide, so it fits a phone best held sideways.
Is ZAPZIPZAP free?
Yes. It is free to play in the browser on itch.io with no ads or sign-up, and its source code is on GitHub.
