Wordsmyth Puzzle #316 for October 21, 2026 on a desktop: the start word OLEANDER above clue cards such as Inject, Reverse, Keep and Move, a timer, a text box and an on-screen keyboard

Wordsmyth gives you a start word and a set of clue cards, shown in no particular order. Each card says how to change your current word, by removing, adding, moving, reversing or swapping letters, and what the new word means. Use every card to finish. Play timed against everyone else, or in a relaxed casual mode.

About Wordsmyth

Wordsmyth is a free daily word puzzle by Lukas Stanley of Fox Point Games. The first puzzle went up on December 10, 2025, and a new numbered one has followed every day since, the same for every player.

Each puzzle starts with one word in large letters and a stack of clue cards. A card names one or more operations, such as Remove the first letter, Inject one letter somewhere, Keep the first three letters, Reverse the whole thing, Move the first letter to the end or Anagram the rest, followed by a Result clue that defines the word you should end up with. On October 21, 2026 the start word was OLEANDER, with cards like Inject Potassium's symbol, Result: like a vehicle in a lot. The cards are listed out of order, so the work is in spotting which one fits the word you hold, then typing the new word and carrying on until every card is used.

Before you press Play you choose Competitive, which times you and places your time against everyone else's as a percentile, or Casual, which keeps no score. A crystal ball hint shows which operation comes next and adds thirty seconds to a timed run, and tapping any operation explains it. Puzzles are hand-made, many by named guest editors, and the site has a dated archive of every past day and a builder for making your own.

It suits players who enjoy word ladders and the wordplay of cryptic clues, and who like a puzzle that takes a few minutes rather than a single guess.

How to play Wordsmyth

  1. Choose Competitive (timed) or Casual, then press Play.
  2. Read the start word and the clue cards, which come in no particular order.
  3. Find a card whose operations turn your current word into a word that fits its Result clue.
  4. Type the new word; it replaces the word at the top and the card is used up.
  5. Keep going until every card has been used. Tap the crystal ball for a hint if you are stuck.

Tips

  • Check the Result clue first: it often tells you the length and sense of the next word.
  • Short operations like Remove the first letter are easy to test against every card in your head.
  • In Competitive mode a hint costs thirty seconds, so scan all the cards once before asking.
  • Turn on Hide used clues in Settings to keep the list short as you go.

Questions

When does a new Wordsmyth puzzle come out?

Each day at midnight by your device's clock. The page picks the puzzle by your local date.

What is the difference between Competitive and Casual mode?

Competitive times you and compares your time with everyone else who played that puzzle in Competitive mode, as a percentile. Casual keeps no score and does not count toward your stats.

What does a hint do?

It shows which operation you need to perform next, and adds thirty seconds to your timer.

Can I play earlier puzzles?

Yes. The archive lists every past puzzle by number and date, back to No. 1 from December 10, 2025.

Does Wordsmyth have ads or need an account?

No. It is free, shows no ads and needs no sign-up. The developer asks players who enjoy it to support the studio with an optional membership.
