Wordistance is a daily word deduction game. Every guess returns one number: how many single-letter insertions, deletions or replacements it takes to turn your word into the mystery word. You keep guessing, with no limit, until the distance reaches zero, with optional hints that split the number into letters to add, remove and replace.
About Wordistance
Wordistance is a browser word game built on edit distance, known in computing as the Levenshtein distance. There is one numbered mystery word per day, the same for every player, and a new one arrives at midnight Pacific Time. The answers are ordinary English words of varying length: recent days ran from SUBMIT to INFECTION.
You type any word of three letters or more and press Guess. The game adds a row with the attempt number, the word and its distance: the smallest number of steps that turns your guess into the answer, where a step is inserting a letter, deleting a letter or replacing one letter with another. PART is one step from PARTY, ART and PORT, and three steps from CARROT. Your latest guess shows above the line, with the earlier ones listed below it.
With hints on, each guess also gets a temperature word and a line that breaks the number down, such as "Just remove 1 letter and replace 4 others". That tells you whether the answer is longer or shorter than your guess. Hints can be switched off before the first guess for a harder game; once you start, the setting locks for the day.
There is no limit on guesses, so the game is about how few you need rather than whether you finish. You can give up to see the word, and a stats panel keeps games won, your best and worst wins and your current and longest streak. A share button copies your result, and a list of previous solutions shows earlier answers by number and date, though past days cannot be replayed.
It suits players who like deduction games such as Mastermind or bulls and cows more than vocabulary tests: the trick is choosing guesses that tell you about length and letters, like CAT then CUT to test one letter. The site is plain, has no ads and needs no account.
How to play Wordistance
- Open wordistance.com; the day's mystery word is already loaded.
- Choose whether to play with hints on or off before your first guess; the choice locks once you start.
- Type any word of at least three letters and press Guess.
- Read the distance: the number of letter insertions, deletions or replacements between your guess and the answer. With hints on, the line below says how many of each.
- Try words that differ by one letter or one length step to learn which changes bring the number down.
- Keep guessing until the distance is 0, or press Give Up to see the word, then share your result.

Tips
- Guess pairs of words that differ by one letter; if their distances differ, that letter matters.
- Vary word length early: with hints on, the add or remove count tells you how long the answer is.
- Play without hints once you know the game: the bare number makes each guess count more.
Questions
What does the number mean?
It is the edit (Levenshtein) distance: how many single-letter insertions, deletions or replacements turn your guess into the answer.
How many guesses do I get?
There is no limit; you can also give up and see the word.
What time does Wordistance reset?
At midnight Pacific Time, when the countdown in the game runs out.
What do the hints do?
With hints on, each guess gets a temperature label and a line saying how many letters to add, remove and replace. You pick hints on or off before your first guess, and it locks for the day.
Can I play past days?
No. The previous solutions list shows earlier answers by number and date, but only today's word can be played.
Do I need an account?
No. Your game and stats are kept by the site for your browser.
