on wordgy.com

Wordgy is a daily word chain puzzle. You get the chain's first and last words and guess the five words between, where each word makes a two-word phrase or compound word with the one below it. Each row gives you its first letter, and you aim for the best score with the fewest tries and tools.
About Wordgy
Wordgy is a free browser game with a new numbered word chain every day, the same for everyone. It has no ads, needs no account and asks for support through donations. Past chains are kept in an archive, there is an Unlimited mode for more chains, and a Make your own page lets you build a chain and send it to friends.
The board is a column of seven rows. The top and bottom words are given and the five rows between are blank, apart from the first letter of the row you are working on. Every word joins the one below it into a familiar phrase or compound word: CHAIN joins REACTION to make chain reaction, and REACTION joins TIME to make reaction time. On the day we played, the chain ran from BLAZING at the top to SNAP at the bottom, with an H to start the second row.
Three tools help when you are stuck. Flip is free and lets you work up from the bottom word instead of down from the top. 1 Letter costs points and moves you past a letter you cannot get, and Length costs half as much and shows how long the next word is. Your score for the day depends on how few tries and paid tools you need.
It suits players who like compound-word and phrase puzzles such as Doople, Chain Link or Circuits, and anyone who wants a short daily bit of lateral thinking on a phone or a computer.
How to play Wordgy
- Open wordgy.com and tap the board to start today's chain.
- Read the top word and the first letter shown on the next row.
- Think of a word that makes a phrase or compound word with the word above, and type it.
- Use Flip to work up from the bottom word when the top is harder going.
- Use 1 Letter or Length only when stuck, since both cost points.
- Fill all five missing words, then check your stats and share or try a past chain from the archive.

Tips
- Try both ends: Flip is free, and the bottom word often narrows the row above it more than the top word does.
- Length costs half of 1 Letter on the same row, so buy it first when a word's size would settle it.
- Say the pair out loud as one phrase; common compounds like hot dog or ground floor are the usual answers.
