Vowel Play is a numbered daily word game from ByThomas Games. Each day you see four five-letter words with their vowels taken out, and you type each whole word back in four tries or fewer, with green and yellow marks on your vowels. Earlier games stay playable from an archive, and your streak is tracked.
About Vowel Play
Vowel Play is a browser word game made by Thomas, a freelance motion designer who builds daily games at ByThomas Games alongside Toppled and Blunderwall. The game counts its numbered days from June 2024.
Each daily game shows four five-letter words written only with their consonants, such as W R S T for WRIST. You type each complete word, consonants and vowels together, on the on-screen keyboard of that word's letters plus A E I O U, or on your own keyboard if you switch it on in the settings. You have four attempts at each word. A vowel in the right place turns green, one that is in the word but misplaced turns yellow, and after your second guess the spaces where the vowels go are shown. Solve all four words to finish the day's game.
The puzzles were once set by hand around a daily theme; the maker now draws four words from a word list each day, so the game is about vocabulary rather than a subject. An archive lists every earlier numbered game, a stats screen keeps your current and best streak, and you can share your result as coloured dots.
The game is free with ads: a full-screen advert with a Continue to game button comes up before you play, and a one-off payment of 3.99 pounds removes ads from all the ByThomas games. It suits players who like quick vocabulary puzzles and Countdown-style letter play.
How to play Vowel Play
- Open Vowel Play and press Play Today's Puzzle, then Continue to game past the advert.
- Look at the first word, shown as its consonants in order.
- Type the whole five-letter word, consonants included, and press Enter.
- Read the colours: a green vowel is in the right place, a yellow one belongs elsewhere in the word.
- After your second guess, use the vowel spaces the game reveals; you have four tries per word.
- Move on through all four words, then share your result or play an earlier game from the archive.

Tips
- Count the consonants: with five letters, three consonants means two vowels to place.
- Try common endings and double vowels when a word will not come.
- Spend your first guess on a likely word even if you are unsure; the colours and the vowel spaces after the second guess narrow it fast.
- Turn on Use Device Keyboard in the settings if you prefer typing on your own keyboard.
