Tolkiendle is a free daily character guessing game for readers of Tolkien. It has two daily games: The Fellowship, with characters from The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, and Ages of Arda, which draws on everything Tolkien wrote. Each guess reveals how close you are, by traits such as race, realm and affiliation.

About Tolkiendle

Tolkiendle sets the daily character guess in Middle-earth. Its home screen offers two games. The Fellowship keeps to the characters of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, the books most readers know. Ages of Arda opens the pool to all of Tolkien's works, so answers can come from The Silmarillion and the earlier ages as well as from the famous quest.

You name a character, and the game compares your guess with the hidden one on race, kin, homes, the books the character appears in and weapons. A cell turns green for a match, orange for a partial one and red for a miss, so each try narrows the field. Both games have one answer a day, the same for everyone, which makes it easy to compare results with other readers.

The site is decorated with Tengwar script and a ring that spins while it loads, and plays free in the browser.

How to play Tolkiendle

Open Tolkiendle and choose The Fellowship or Ages of Arda.
Type the name of a Tolkien character and submit it.
Read how your guess compares with the answer on race, kin, homes, books and weapons: green is a match, orange partial, red a miss.
Narrow it down until you find the day's character.
Play the other pool too, and come back the next day.

Tips

Start The Fellowship with a member of a big group, such as a hobbit or a dwarf of Thorin's company, to learn the most from the comparison.
In Ages of Arda, think of the First Age elves and the Valar as well as the War of the Ring.
Note the realm clue early; it splits Middle-earth quickly.
