Lotrdle is a fan-made Android game with a new Lord of the Rings character every day. A blurred face hides the answer; each guess reveals six clues, race, gender, realm, first book, weapon and role, with arrows that point to an earlier or later book of the trilogy, and you have as many tries as you need. A random practice mode is there between days.

Lotrdle puts a face behind a blur and asks who it is. You type any Middle-earth character, and the game answers with six clues comparing your guess with the hidden one: race, gender, realm, the book of the trilogy in which they first appear, weapon and role. A clue turns green when it is right and red when it is wrong, and for the first book an arrow shows whether the answer appears earlier or later.

Guesses are unlimited, so the puzzle is about getting there in as few tries as you can, and a sealed hint opens after three guesses. The pool holds 42 characters from the Shire to Mordor. Besides today's character there is a Practice mode with random characters, night and parchment themes, and atmospheric music that can be switched off.

Open Lotrdle and tap Play today's character.
Type a Middle-earth character and tap Guess.
Read the six clues: race, gender, realm, first book, weapon and role.
Use the arrows on the first-book clue and the sealed hint after three guesses.
Keep guessing until the face is unmasked, then come back tomorrow.

Tips

Open with a member of the Fellowship; their varied races and weapons spread the clues.
The first-book arrow quickly tells you whether to think of The Fellowship of the Ring or later volumes.
With only 42 characters, ruling out a race removes a big share of the pool.
