Subwaydle on 30 October 2026, Chauncey St to 145 St with 2 transfers: a first guess of J, R and A with J and A green and R blue, above the train-line keyboard

Subwaydle is a free Wordle-inspired game about the New York City subway. Each day you get a start and an end station and six tries to guess the exact set of three trains, in order, that makes the day's trip.

About Subwaydle

Subwaydle swaps Wordle's letters for subway lines. The day's puzzle names two stations, such as Mt Eden Av to 20 Av, and says how many transfers to use. Your guess is a sequence of three trains that really can make that trip with transfers between them, and there is one routing that matches the puzzle of the day, which may or may not be the fastest.

After each guess the tiles are coloured. Green means that train is in the right spot of the trip; a train shown in blue means another train sharing the same routing belongs in that spot; yellow means the train is part of the trip but in the wrong spot; grey means it is not used at all. You have six tries. Once you solve it, a map traces the day's journey line by line and names the station where each train is boarded.

The rules follow the real system closely: routings are based on the midday schedule, weekend puzzles use regular weekend routings, transfers are only allowed where lines split, no station can be passed through twice, and the Staten Island Railway and the ferry link at South Ferry count. Several stations share a name, which adds to the challenge.

Subwaydle was made by Sunny Ng, and its source code is public on GitHub. The subway route symbols are used with the MTA's permission. Puzzles are numbered from 29 January 2022, and the result you share says whether it was a weekday or a Weekend Edition. The previous day's answer and stats are posted on the game's social account. It suits New Yorkers, transit fans and anyone who knows the A from the C.

How to play Subwaydle

  1. Read the day's start and end stations.
  2. Enter three trains that can make the trip with transfers, and press Enter.
  3. Read the colours: green right spot, blue a train with the same routing, yellow wrong spot, grey not used.
  4. Refine your route and find the day's routing within six tries.

Tips

  • Think about where lines diverge: transfers are only allowed at those points.
  • Remember that several stations share a name, so check which one the puzzle means.
  • On weekends, use weekend service patterns rather than weekday ones.
  • On a keyboard, type I for the Staten Island Railway, S for the 42 St shuttle, K for the Franklin Av shuttle and H for the Rockaway Park shuttle.
