Sqword mid-game: C, L and O placed across the top row of the 5 by 5 grid, with a two-letter card offering K or Q to choose from

Sqword is a free daily word game in which letter cards are drawn one at a time and each must go somewhere on a 5 by 5 grid for good. When the grid is full, every row and column scores its longest word, up to 50 points, and your score is ranked on the day's Sqworboard.

About Sqword

Sqword is a word game of placement and nerve. The day's deck deals one card at a time, and you choose a square for it on a 5 by 5 board; once a letter is down it cannot move. Rows read left to right and columns top to bottom, and the aim is to have them spell 3, 4 or 5-letter words when the last card lands.

The deck is not only plain letters. A few cards show two rarer letters, such as K or Q, J or V, W or Z and X or Y, and you pick which one to play. Jokers let you enter any letter you like, which makes them the best rescue for a row that is one letter short of a word.

Scoring is by length: each line scores its longest word, so a five-letter word across a row is worth 5, and a perfect board scores 50. Everyone gets the same deck on the same day, so the Sqworboard counts the day's scores and shows the average. Your streak counts consecutive days played, a Deck button shows the cards in the deck, and you can share your score when you finish. A practice mode lets you replay the day's deck without changing your place on the board.

Sqword is made by Games for All, LLC, and is free in the browser with no account and no ads, with a dark mode. It suits players who like the risk-taking of a dice or card placement game as much as finding words, and fans of the 5 by 5 grid puzzles in this list.

How to play Sqword

  1. Open Sqword and look at the current card above the grid.
  2. If the card shows two letters, tap the one you want; if it is a joker, type the letter you want.
  3. Tap a square on the 5 by 5 grid to place the letter; it cannot be moved afterwards.
  4. Keep placing each new card, aiming to spell words across rows and down columns.
  5. When the 25th letter is down, each row and column scores its longest word: 3, 4 or 5 points.
  6. Check your rank on the day's Sqworboard and share your score.

Tips

  • Leave a corner or a column loose for awkward letters rather than breaking a good row.
  • Three-letter words score, so a short word in a bad line is better than nothing.
  • Plan words that share letters across and down; the same vowel can serve both.
  • Save thinking about jokers for the hardest gap: a joker can be any letter, so it can finish a five-letter word that no plain card would.

Questions

How is Sqword scored?

Each row and column scores the length of the longest word it contains (3, 4 or 5 points), for a maximum of 50.

Is the Sqword deck the same for everyone?

Yes. The deck is shuffled from the date, so everyone gets the same cards in the same order each day, which is why there is a daily Sqworboard and an average score for the day.

What time does Sqword reset?

The deck follows the date in UTC-10 (Hawaii time), so a new deck starts at 10:00 UTC, which is 6 a.m. Eastern in summer.

Can I move a letter once it is placed?

No. Once a letter is placed it stays.

What are the joker and two-letter cards?

A joker lets you enter any letter. A two-letter card, such as K or Q, lets you choose which of the two to place.
