Squareword 1733 on a computer after two guesses: green letters placed in the 5x5 grid, yellow hint boxes at the end of each row and a coloured keyboard below

Squareword is a free daily word puzzle where five hidden five-letter words are stacked into a square, so the columns spell words too. Every guess you type is tested against all five rows at once, and you try to fill the grid in as few guesses as possible.

About Squareword

Squareword calls itself a daily word game in two dimensions. The hidden answer is a 5x5 square of letters in which every row and every column is a five-letter word. Each day has one numbered square, the same for every player, and the count runs from 31 January 2022, so 30 October 2026 brought puzzle 1733.

You play by typing any five-letter word. It is checked against all five rows at once. Letters that sit in the right place in a row turn green in the grid, and letters that belong in a row but elsewhere are listed in a yellow box at the end of that row. The keyboard colours each letter too: grey when it is nowhere in the square, yellow while some copies are still unplaced, green when all are placed.

The score is how few guesses you need, so a good guess works on several rows at once. As the grid fills, the columns become a second set of clues, and the end feels like a small crossword with no clue list. A finished square brings a short poem made from some of its words.

The game is made by the developer behind ChangeWord, ClickWord, SpaceWord, VideoPuzzle, Explainle and Estimatle, who posts updates in its notifications panel. Since January 2026 past puzzles can be opened from the archive after a short video ad. A Google or email login is optional and only syncs your stats between devices. The site carries display ads beside the board on a computer and a banner at phone size.

How to play Squareword

  1. Close the welcome cards or press Got it to reach the empty grid.
  2. Type any valid five-letter word and press Enter.
  3. Letters in the right spot of any row turn green in the grid.
  4. Letters that belong in a row but in another spot appear in the yellow box at the end of that row.
  5. Read the crossing columns as well as the rows, and fill the whole square in as few guesses as you can.

Tips

  • Open with words full of common letters to light up as many rows as possible.
  • Read the columns as well as the rows: a half-filled column often has only one possible word.
  • Count your guesses: the score is how few you need, not how fast you are.
