on playspellcase.com

Spellcase hides eight words in an 8x8 grid of scrambled letters. Each word comes with a clue, a length and a starting letter, and every letter in the grid belongs to exactly one word. Work out the answers and spell them from the grid until no letters are left, then file the case in your casebook.
About Spellcase
Spellcase calls itself a daily puzzle of spelling and deduction, dressed as a detective case. Each numbered case breaks eight words into letters and scatters them across an 8x8 grid, 64 letters in all, with no loose ends: every letter is used once. Case No. 1 ran on 1 September 2026, and a new one opens each day.
A case starts with the bare grid. Tap to reveal the eight starting letters, then open the case file: a list of eight clues with the length of each answer, written in a playful, punning style (on 18 October they included Big leafy flowering pH meters, 9 letters, and Child in the "why" phase, 11). Pick a clue, work out the word, and spell it by tapping its letters in the grid. As words come out the grid thins, and the letters left over narrow down the harder clues, which is where the deduction comes in.
When you are stuck there is help, at a cost to your grade: reveal another clue for a word, reveal the vowels, reveal the next letter, or sweep the grid down to a few tiles. A finished case is graded on letters shown and misspellings, and the result can be shared as a short report.
Solved cases go into a casebook. Missed days can be unlocked from the archive and played later, cold cases add extra puzzles beyond the daily, and Build a Case lets you put your own words into a case and send its link to someone else. The game runs free in the browser with no account and no ads, laid out as a phone-width column on a desktop too. It suits players who like crossword-style clues but want a puzzle that also rewards working from the leftover letters.
How to play Spellcase
- Open playspellcase.com: today's case shows as an 8x8 grid of 64 scrambled letters.
- Tap to reveal the eight starting letters, then tap again to open the case file with its eight clues and answer lengths.
- Tap a clue to work it, and spell the answer by tapping its letters in the grid.
- Each letter in the grid is used once, so solved words leave fewer letters for the rest.
- Use a reveal (a clue, the vowels, the next letter) only when stuck: it lowers your grade.
- Spell all eight words to close the case; it is graded and goes into your casebook.

Tips
- Start with the shortest clues: four-letter answers use few letters and are quickest to confirm.
- Look for rare letters like Q, Z and K in the grid: they point to specific answers.
- When stuck, list the letters left over and match them to the remaining lengths.
- Read clues for wordplay: many are puns rather than plain definitions.
