on pistonarcade.com

Spec Shift is a daily car specs game from Piston Arcade. Each day's run shows a car and one of its figures, such as weight or torque, and you call whether the next car's figure is higher or lower, ten rounds in a row. Everyone gets the same run, and missed days wait in the archive.
About Spec Shift
Spec Shift is one of the four free daily car games on Piston Arcade, beside Garage Grid, Mystery Car and Wrenchdle. It plays in the browser and asks nothing of you but a feel for real car numbers.
A day's run has ten rounds. Each round names a specification, shows the current car with its figure, and puts a second car next to it with a question mark. You choose the direction: lighter or heavier, more or less power, quicker or slower to 62 mph. The next car then becomes the car to beat, under a new specification. Each correct call scores a point, so a run ends somewhere between 0 and 10.
The specs move around through the run. The side panel lists the day's categories, which can include power, torque, weight, cylinders, engine size, top speed and 0-62 mph time, and the cars range from current sports cars to older hot hatches; the run we opened started with a Porsche 911 GT3 of the 992 generation against an Audi S3 of the 8L generation.
The page also shows the day's stats from other players: the average score, the share who scored six or better, and the share of perfect runs. Each run is numbered, and the archive holds earlier runs, which do not count toward your own stats.
It suits drivers and car fans who know roughly what a car weighs or how much power it makes, and anyone who likes the quick back-and-forth of higher-or-lower games.
How to play Spec Shift
- Open Spec Shift on Piston Arcade to load the day's numbered run.
- Read the specification for the round and the current car's figure for it.
- Look at the next car and choose the direction its figure goes, such as Lighter or Heavier.
- The next car becomes the benchmark, and a new specification is asked about.
- Score a point for each correct call across the ten rounds, then check the day's stats against other players.
Tips
- Car generation codes matter: the code under each name (992, 8L) tells you which era of the model you are comparing.
- Sports cars are not always heavier or lighter than they look; modern safety kit adds weight to newer models of the same badge.
- Use the archive to practise on past runs, since they do not change your stats.
