Los Angeles Times Games title card for Slide, with a sliding tile grid icon

Slide is a daily sliding puzzle on the Los Angeles Times games page. Each day a photograph from the paper is cut into a 4x4 grid of tiles and scrambled, and you slide the tiles one at a time until the picture is whole again.

About Slide (Los Angeles Times)

Slide is one of the newest games on the LA Times games page: the first puzzles appeared at the end of September 2026. It is the classic fifteen-puzzle with a newspaper twist. Each day's picture comes from the LA Times' own photography, so far mostly food, bars and restaurants from its food coverage, and each puzzle has a playful title such as Knead for Speed or Something's Fishy.

The picture is cut into a 4x4 grid with one gap. You slide a tile into the gap, which opens a new gap, and keep going until every tile is back in place. The puzzle is the same for everyone that day, and a timer and move count let you compare a clean solve with a messy one. It runs on the Amuse Labs player inside latimes.com, a date picker keeps recent puzzles, and an LA Times account adds streaks and achievements.

It needs no vocabulary or trivia, so it is a good pick for players who want a short visual puzzle beside the paper's word games.

How to play Slide (Los Angeles Times)

  1. Open Slide on latimes.com/games and look at the scrambled 4x4 picture.
  2. Click or tap a tile next to the empty space to slide it into the gap.
  3. Keep sliding tiles to move pieces of the photo toward their places.
  4. Finish when the picture is whole; the game shows your time.
  5. Pick an earlier date from the list to play a puzzle you missed.

Tips

  • Solve the top row first, then the second, and leave the last two rows to solve together.
  • Place the last two tiles of a row as a pair: move them into position side by side, then turn them in.
  • Look at the photo's edges and strong colours to tell tiles apart quickly.
