Royal Family #369 being solved: rook, bishop, knight and queen placed on the 5x5 zone board beside the pawn, attacked squares striped, the king still to place

Royal Family is a daily chess logic puzzle from CoffeeFirst. You place a king, queen, rook, bishop, knight and pawn on a 5x5 board split into six coloured zones, one piece per zone and no piece attacking another; your solve time goes on the leaderboard.

About Royal Family

Royal Family is a region puzzle in the family of Queens and Star Battle, with chess pieces in place of crowns. Each day's numbered board is a 5x5 grid divided into six coloured zones, and you have six pieces to place. Every zone must hold exactly one piece, and no piece may attack any other under the normal rules of chess.

The different pieces are what make it more than a Queens variant: a knight's jump, a bishop's diagonals and a rook's lines each rule out different squares, and the board highlights each piece's attacks as you place it. The pawn starts already on the board so that the puzzle has a single solution. Unlike Queens, the goal is not to fill every row and column, only every zone.

The puzzles are designed to be solved by logic, though the game admits newcomers may guess while they learn to see the attacks. If you are stuck, a lightbulb under a piece shows which zone it belongs in. Your solve time is your score on the leaderboard, and an archive keeps every earlier board back to No. 1 on 26 October 2025. Puzzle 369 fell on 29 October 2026, and a new number comes with each local midnight.

The game is free to play with no account. Ads sit around the board, and on a phone a card with a Continue button comes before the puzzle. A paid plan removes the ads, and signing in is only needed to put your time on the leaderboard.

It suits Queens players who know how chess pieces move and want the same kind of deduction with more variety.

How to play Royal Family

  1. Open Royal Family and press Play Now to reach today's numbered 5x5 board, with its six coloured zones and the pawn already placed.
  2. Drag a piece from the row below the board onto a square. The board shades the squares that piece attacks.
  3. Make sure every zone holds exactly one piece and no piece attacks another.
  4. Use a lightbulb hint if stuck, and finish quickly for a better leaderboard time.

Tips

  • Place the queen first: it attacks the most squares, so it has the fewest legal spots.
  • The knight is the easiest to fit late, since its jumps leave nearby squares free.
  • Small zones have few squares; check which pieces can sit there without attacking the pawn.

Questions

How is Royal Family different from Queens?

It uses six different chess pieces with their own attacks, and only every zone must be filled, not every row and column.

Why is the pawn already placed?

To make sure each puzzle has exactly one solution.

How is it scored?

By solve time, on a daily leaderboard.

When does a new Royal Family puzzle come out?

At midnight on your own device. The game works out the puzzle number from your local date, so players in different time zones move to the next board at different hours.

Does Royal Family have ads?

Yes. Ads sit beside and below the board, and on a phone an ad card with a Continue button comes first. CoffeeFirst sells plans that remove them.
