Repo Safari turns open source browsing into a small platformer. Each day everyone gets the same trail of topic rooms; you walk along it, drop into rooms, compare their active repositories and save the ones you like as stickers, then share a row of squares for the day.
About Repo Safari
Repo Safari is a free browser game from W20 Labs, a small product studio that publishes it on GitHub Pages. It describes itself as a new trail through open source every day, and that is what it is: a short side-scrolling walk where each platform is a room for one GitHub topic, such as RAG, web scraping, Postgres or low code.
The day's trail is drawn from the date, so every player on the same UTC day sees the same rooms in the same order, and no room repeats until the whole pool has been walked. The pool held 81 rooms in late October 2026 at twelve a day, so a room comes back about once a week, in a new mix of neighbours. The room data is rebuilt from GitHub each Monday. A banner over the first room names the trail by its date, and a counter in the corner tracks how many rooms you have visited and how many stickers you have saved today. A fresh trail arrives at midnight UTC.
Above each room a card shows its most starred repository, with its description, star count and how recently it was updated. Drop into the room and you see the rest of its repositories side by side. Any one you like can be saved as a sticker into an album that lives in your browser. Repos that are rising fast appear as rare stickers in a room at the end of the trail and stay for one week only.
The rooms only include projects with a commit in the last six months, and the numbers come from the GitHub API. When you are done, the share button copies a row of squares in Wordle style: green for a room where you saved a sticker, yellow for one you dropped into, white for one you walked past. A streak counts the days you played in that browser.
There is also a side tool, the Idea Shower, that mixes three repositories into product ideas. It is not part of the daily trail. Repo Safari suits developers and anyone curious about open source who wants a light, short daily habit rather than a puzzle to solve.
How to play Repo Safari
- Open the page; the day's trail starts at the left with a sign that names its date.
- Walk with the left and right arrow keys and press Space to jump, twice for a double jump, to reach the next room's platform.
- Read the card above a room to see its most starred repository, then press the down arrow to drop into the room and see the rest.
- Press E or the Save sticker button on a repository you like to keep it in your album; press Enter to open it on GitHub.
- Press Esc to climb back out and carry on along the trail to the rising room at the end.
- Press Share to copy your row of coloured squares for the day.

Tips
- Visit the rising room at the end of the trail: its repos are rare stickers and leave the trail after a week.
- Your album and streak are kept in this browser only, so play on the same browser each day to keep them.
- Use the counter at the top right to see which rooms you have not yet dropped into before you share.
Questions
When does Repo Safari get a new trail?
At 00:00 UTC every day. The page shows how long is left until the next trail.
Is everyone's trail the same?
Yes. The rooms are chosen from the date, so every player on the same UTC day walks the same rooms in the same order.
Do I need a GitHub account?
No. The trail plays with no sign-up; your stickers and streak are stored in your browser.
Is Repo Safari made by GitHub?
No. The page says it is an independent fan project, made by W20 Labs, and not affiliated with GitHub.
