Rebusly No. 201 for 22 October 2026, Sports: letters bubbling out of a cauldron above empty answer boxes for a 5, 2, 7 phrase and an on-screen keyboard

Rebusly is a free daily rebus drawn from the news. Each morning a hand-crafted visual puzzle hides a phrase from a real headline; you work out the phrase, then read four curated articles on the story from outlets across the political spectrum. It has no ads, no account and a free archive.

About Rebusly

A rebus spells out words with pictures, letters and their placement, and Rebusly makes one a day from the news. One recent puzzle hung the letters N, O, S and E on a clothes line, dripping into a puddle. Others place words inside, above or across each other, the way OUT sliding out of its frame reads as falling out. The puzzle for 22 October, No. 201 in the Sports section, bubbled the letters of a word up out of a cauldron, with the answer lengths (5, 2, 7) shown under the picture.

You have three tries. Three hints come in order, the news context, how to read the visual and the first letter of each word, and each hint or wrong guess costs one of the tries; Reveal ends the puzzle and shows the answer. A timer runs while you work.

Once you solve the puzzle, the page opens onto the story behind it: four articles from different outlets, chosen from left, centre and right. The section rotates through the week, from the Front Page on Sunday through Business, Op-Ed, Entertainment, Sports, History and Culture. Your result can be shared as small shapes with your time, without giving the answer away.

A new puzzle goes up at midnight Eastern Time. Every past puzzle stays in a free archive, and the site has no ads and needs no account. Rebusly is edited by Robert Lyons, who writes each puzzle by hand; the company also makes custom puzzles for brands and free worksheet packs for teachers.

It suits players who like word play and want a daily game that also tells them something about the day.

How to play Rebusly

  1. Open rebusly.com, press Play Today's Rebusly and close the how-to box with Let's Play.
  2. Study the picture: look at which letters or words appear, how they are placed, how big they are and what is happening to them.
  3. Check the word lengths shown under the picture, then type the phrase on the keyboard and press Enter.
  4. If you are stuck, take a hint: news context, then how to read the visual, then first letters. Each hint or wrong guess uses one of your three tries.
  5. When you solve it, read the four articles on the news story behind it, share your result and come back the next morning.

Tips

  • Say what you see out loud, including position words like over, under, inside and after; many rebuses are built on them.
  • Repeated or broken letters usually mean a verb such as falling, breaking or growing.
  • Think about the day's section; a Sports puzzle hides a sports phrase.
  • Count the boxes under the picture before guessing: the word lengths rule out most readings.
